This question is specifically for the meyers manx crowd or other sought after body styles....
I have a manx II and plan on building it to be used on and off road in equal shares. Is this a bad idea? Is there enough value in the body alone to warrant not using it in a harmful environment?
opinions.............or options............. _________________ If Stupidity got us into this mess, then why can't it get us out? ....Will Rogers |

I don' think it matters.
Build it as an off road only and you will attract that crowd. Build it as a road only and you will get that crowd. Build it as a dual sport (on/off road) and you will get that crowd.
You are not talking a priceless Ferrari here. You are talking about a hunk of fiberglass that was conceived and sold as something fun. How you define fun should be your direction in your build.
If you paint it an ugly color, throw on cheezy wheels, and add suicide doors it will not matter. There is relatively minimal value (in the scheme of things) in the body alone. The quality of the build will add the value. |

I think jspbtown hit the nail on the head its a fibreglass buggy, if your not happy with the body it can be modified again and again.
Buggies arent usually bought for an investment as most guys building will agree the budget gets blown on most cases. Here in Australia Manx are harder to find, so I had to think hard about removing the spare wheel well to allow bar work etc but practicality over originality won out.
If you need some inspiration there are a few dual sport buggies on dual sport buggy forum. Personally I like the look of Lee's Manx. it is off road but retains the old school Manx look and Ive been building a similar style.
The true measure of value will be your enjoyment...

I've gone off road, but still street legal. Yeah, it still needs paint. If anyone can help with that, please PM me.

Well said jspbtown.
adams77 our Manx has been "used on and off road in equal shares". But my fondest memories and the most fun we have had with it is to play, explore and have all sorts of adventures in places that have a "harmful environment". _________________ "The simplest of outdoor adventures - the most treasured memories." - Bruce Meyers

We mainly use ours for off road. We drive them on the highway to get there, which isn't far from where we live. I've never driven mine up the mountain to leave our valley but when I do I'll take into consideration our rear camber!
On the Calcite Mine Road heading down (Anza-Borrego Desert State Park)...

Its just a problem for buggies with poor quality bodies and flexible chassis (the type with big holes and cracks in the tunnel). |

Mine is a Spatz, and yes we do drive it in there Colorado mountains. I understand why you ask about fiberglass cracking, in manx, the body is thinner. My Buddy's buggy which I am buying is a manx and its been through some of the roughest mountains passes and no cracks. He was running coil over shocks.
One of our friend rides broke, so the owner of the buggy (Manx) made a wild mad dash back to base camp. 30 miles away from base camp which in the mountains mean slow rough passes. There were No breaks in the fiberglass. He did though popped his rear shock and thats all _________________ OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW BETTER AND STILL TO YOUNG TO CARE!!!!!

Do you have more pictures of your roof rack? I was looking at making something similar to that for mine. My hair is a little too thin to take the sun beating on it. Heh. |

The rack actually still lets some sun in, but most is blocked by the spare tire. I also added a sun shade top, held into the channel of the windshield and with bungees in the back. Another Samba member by the name of Daryl made the rack for me, custom per my wants and car, and he did great work. I can't seem to find his contact info though.
BTW, my glass has never cracked from use, and it does get used. |

Would the Daryl be Bugzyla? He does a lot of custom fab work. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

I don't hthink it the same guy. The Daryl who did my rack was local to So Calif. He came by my place, made measurements and created the rack. I also think at the time he was just doing it as a side jobs. Didn't go under the name Bugzla. I'll see if I can find his contact info. |

Here are pictures of my 2 buggys, I use them mainly for off-road but they are 100% street legal and handle really good on the highway.
This one I made it 5 years ago and I have pre run 1,000's of miles on dirt roads, it has never cracked or broke the fiberglass.
I just finished this one about 3 months ago and took it for a 540 mile off road-highway trip during easter weekend in Baja Mexico. No problems so far..
Just do it! |

What tires do you have on the front of the yellow buggy? Size and brand. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class
