Good call on the paint removal. Thanks.
So has anyone replaced a tranny before? Is it easy? I'm getting a little nervous about it to be honest. |
It is really a breeze if you have a decent concrete surface to roll a floor jack on, but is can be done with nothing more than a bunch of blocks and some muscle power, just don't let it fall on you. |

We had a fire, so totally devastated about this, just as we were about to get back on the road, I get this news from Haines. Looks like the battery caught fire somehow.
ECU dead. not sure about wiring harness. Now on route to Haines to try and fix this mess.
Anyone know anyone in AK or Whitehorse that would have space to help us resolve this?
SO gutted!
I talk more about it in a video here

The battery may have froze and then overheated as is was being charged with the solar panels.
The damage looks bad, but hopefully not that bad. The bed and some of the structure, probably the wiring is going to be a headache.
Ben: Contact Antonio Trejo (Parts VW) for a new ECU. I have wiring schematics for the Mexican Beetle engine and ECU connections, let me know (PM me) if you need them. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)

WTH! How does this even happen when it has just been sitting there? Something does not seem right about this... |
Not 100% sure on the details yet but may be due to freeze thaw. Will find more details when we get there.

New ECU already on it's way from Mexico. $450 US, had thought about converting to carb, but the overall cost would have been higher.

Ben, You have had your share of mishaps and this is just another one of
those that you had no control over
At least someone was there to put the fire out.
Let us know when you find the cause of the fire.

Try contacting samba member 'Yukon Syncro'. He lives just outside Whitehorse and is active on the Vanagon forum. He likely can give you advice on Whitehorse shops... good luck.
That fire sucks big time. I am glad Chad was there to put it out before it took the whole bus... _________________ Dave O

Ouch! Lots of Simple Green solution, green scrubbies and peppermint essential oil will get the smell out. Frozen batteries can cause fires when re-activated. Soldier on brave knight! _________________ Fat chick owner/operator |

I don't know man, the smoke damage looks pretty bad. Maybe scrub and repaint might lock in the smell? _________________ Around The World in a VW - Follow the Docuseries

I have had to do it 2X (don't ask). 10% Simple Green 90% water, lots of green scrubbies, change water regularly. Peppermint essential oil ($20 for a small vial) pump spray with a perfume mister. If you paint afterwards use oil based rustoleum type paint direct w/o primer. It works _________________ Fat chick owner/operator |
