I have had a lot of fun over the past couple of years writing about the cosmetic stuff accomplished, and various local driving adventures I've had with my '70 Convertible Bug, ref: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=457706
But now comes the time to start a new thread on a different topic.
A confluence of events led to this, starting back even before the '70 Bug ever came into my life, and I'll attempt to explain the background in more detail as I am able.
But for now I would at least like to get the ball rolling with this new topic, "Creeky," the '69 Convertible Bug:
Like the '70, this car came from a seller within Connecticut, who was (and possibly still is) also a Samba member.
Over the past several months, I've not been able to drive the '70 due to an engine problem, which is presently being dealt with by a trusted expert. This led me to redirect my attention to the '69, which had been sitting waiting for its share of attention. I've done a bunch of stuff lately to try to get the '69 into driveable shape, and I think that as of this evening, when I replaced the spark plugs, I *may* possibly have conquered the last of the big hurdles (though I also very well appreciate the concept of 'jinxing myself' by saying something like that!).
So, while many of our friends from the CT VW Association are up at the big "Mark's" cruise night tonight, enjoying "VW night" (on a magnificent summer evening), I am also enjoying some good feelings in having (hopefully) brought this '69 Bug a little closer to being a good driving car once again--although definitely not without the *very significant help* of several other *great folks*, who I'll also make sure to mention the contributions of as I get into the story.
Lots more to come, as I'm able to get to it. For now, have a good evening and thanks for visiting this thread! _________________ Stock Steve

Couple of overall shots of the current condition of Creeky the '69 Bug. These were from two weekends ago--actual date of photos, Sunday, August 12th, 2012:
Yup, that's a little bit of fresh Yukon Yellow you see on the front quarter and the front apron... and a little bit at the lower edge of the driver's side rear quarter... and on that tiny bit of the reinforcement channel that you can see peeking out from inside the front fenderwell... _________________ Stock Steve

I had to get out to Madison this evening for a small errand, and decided it would be a nice run for the '69 Bug, to try to see how much more dialing-in I needed to do. Happy to say that I think I'm still making positive progress--not completely there yet--but "on the road," I would say. I think I still need to make more carb adjustments...
Started out with a photo-op on scenic Route 146. This was probably around 7:45pm or so... Can really see how the days are starting to get darker earlier lately...
Next some gas at a Mobil station right by the highway...
Finally, out in Madison, around 9pm or so, I found that I had parked near a street lamp, and with a nice crescent moon in the background, tried one more shot, with the camera set for "twilight"...
I will start going back in time soon, to tell the story of how this car came into our lives, but for now, just enjoying being able to get it out for some summer driving.
Have a good evening! _________________ Stock Steve

Looking good Steve. I look forward to more reports and driving experiences. It's great to see the old Bug back out on the road being enjoyed. |

Thanks Rugged and Ruppsterdog (is that your new handle, Jim?)!
Parked by the Green in the center of Guiford, CT earlier today when I was over there on another errand. I am parked along I think Boston Street, which borders the southern end of the green, with the car facing west.
In the foreground is the front edge of the Guilford World War 1 memorial. I spent some time studying the names on it--recognized many "classic" Guilford names...
Here is some info about this particular monument, from: http://ctmonuments.net/2009/04/soldiers%E2%80%99-monument-guilford/
'...On the southwest corner of the green, a boulder bears a bronze plaque dedicated “in honor of our men and women who served in the World War 1917 1918.” The monument also lists the names of about 97 residents who served, as well as four names of residents who gave their lives in the conflict...'
While I was out I also straightened the steering wheel, tried tuning the carb a bit more, and also reattached a small fuel vapor line that attaches to a barb on the left side of the tank, that I think had been giving me some fumes while driving with a full tank. The tank is a beautifully refurbished unit that our friend Chuck restored. I'm going to have to get a picture of the trunk area some time--it's positively beautiful, with restored gas tank, lots of refinished donor sheetmetal, and refinished spare wheel, fitted with very nice vintage "Pneumant" tire (the original spare tire from my '70 Bug--or I should say, the spare tire that was in the car at the time I purchased it...)... _________________ Stock Steve

Old handle, first post. I believe I joined years ago to poke around but never posted. I guess my cherry is now considred popped. The tank that was in there was for a gasoline heater equipped Beetle. |

Next had to make a "ceremonial" photo-op stop at another well-known VW parts establishment that is just off of the Berlin Turnpike, in Berlin, CT (wasn't open at the time, due to the early hour, I'm sure). It is appropriate since the Creeky Bug contains some significant parts that were sourced here. Even though there is no signage outside, I think most local-area VW folks would recognize this location...

Here are a couple of early evening photos by the North Madison Congregational Church, which is located on CT Route 79, right at the traffic circle intersection with CT Route 80, in Madison, CT. Date of the photos was Thursday, September 6th, 2012.
Had to drive straight over to Madison on my way home from work that day, and you can see that I still had my "Caution Show Moving Vehicle" reflective magnet on the back--which I use specifically for my early morning commutes on I-95, frequently pre-dawn, when I'm out there battling for lane space with the big trucks that rumble through Connecticut...
I bought the magnet online from http://www.incolor-inc.com/ _________________ Stock Steve

Just want to pass along my appreciation for your threads. I love just about everything here on the Samba and while reading most threads make me think about what I need to do to my bug and put me in the mood to work on, yours makes me just want to drive, which is why we have these things in the first place. Thanks! _________________ Steve |
