Just curious if we have any transmission experts in here that could help me out. My 68 bug is starting to get very hard to find first gear. It also grinds when going into reverse and once I do get it into reverse it then becomes almost impossible to find any gear. It takes me a a couple tries before I have to force it into 4th gear then 3rd then 2nd until I eventually find first gear again. If the car is turned off though it goes into every gear perfectly fine. Any thoughts? Are my synchros going? Could it be my clutch? Any help is appreciated. Thank you!!

Sorry I forgot to add I already checked the shift rod bushing and shift coupler. They both looked to be in great shape and were replaced by previous owner.

Try adjusting the clutch cable.

Sorry for my ignorance, but how exactly do you adjust the clutch cable? And how would I know what’s a good setting or adjustment for it?

There's a wingnut that needs to be tighten.

The procedure is outline in the Robert Bentley shop manual.

Its on the driver side crank the wing nut in a few or more turns clock wise. If it turns real easy its to lose it should fight you a little bit Test and see if its better. You can see im about due for a new cable ..or clutch getting near the end of the threads yikes Shocked

Make sure the bend in the bowden tube is correct too.
