I'm sorry, did you say if you're going to do any massive level of restore to it; or just tune it up put a little elbow grease into it and call it good?
I think it looks awesome! I thought about doing the same for my wife someday, for her first car. But something tells me there won't be anything "classic" (or CLASSY) about a 80's Honda Prelude. |
I'm not going to do anything major to it. It has gone through a resto at one point and it held relatively well.
The engine however, need to be gone through (valves, gaskets, plugs, timing ,compression, etc) for my personal knowledge of it's condition.
I will probably drop the motor, clean it up, clean up the bay, and replace the tar board before it gets sucked into the fan. _________________ Volkswagen...Making mechanics out of owners since WW2.

LOL! Hey, I had seats out a prelude in my first 69 Beetle. comfy.
I intended on giving my son the 68 I have for his first car. But, being the kid that he is, he wanted a Honda. He convinced me by telling me that the beetle doesn't have airbags.....he's right. He must already think he is going to wreck. _________________ Volkswagen...Making mechanics out of owners since WW2.

Aggree, the car looks beautiful and has some "lived in" charm to it. A little elbow grease and it'll be perfect.

Every time my wife see's a Prelude she sighs about how much she misses her first car. I don't think there is anyway I'll bring myself to buying one, let alone working on it. I wish her first car was as cool as a VDub.
My first car was a 1970 restored beetle from my dad. I loved every minute of it. Sold it when I went into the Marines. Found out the kid I sold it to got T-Boned by a dump truck 2 weeks later and it ended up in a scrap yard. I'd give anything to have that car back right now. Maybe I could hint that my wife buys me (another) beetle in memory of my first car.
But I digress, back on subject! _________________ - e

Holy cow! sounds like my story about that same 69. In 1996, i had a newborn, a motorcycle, an MR2 and the beetle. One had to go and I stupidly sold it to Military guy in Miramar. Not too many years later, I was hustling parts for NAPA and this kid calls looking for parts for a 69 Bug. I don't know why but I asked if it was white. Asked if it had grey Honda seats, and then I got real specific and we came to the conclusion it was my old car.
Sadly, he was looking for parts because he got nailed by a trash truck. _________________ Volkswagen...Making mechanics out of owners since WW2.

An update:
(I figure I owe it to the people who read this from the beginning.)
The day after I got the car, I drove it around the neighborhood for a shakedown. After putting in the garage, a significant amount of oil pooled underneath the car.
This was the night I received the car:
the engine bay was oily all over to begin with so I decided to drop the motor and just take it apart to a long block.:
Well, as some of you know, once you fix one thing, you find something else to fix. Since I had the motor down, I went and put in new tarboard (thanks jchickn), OP sender, gaskets everywhere, preheat hose, tin grommets, plugs, oil, wires, oil cooler seals, missing/bent tin, dist seal, as well as cleaned up the fan itself.
I was debating on repainting the tin but decided not to as the paint left was original and despite the nicks, scratches, and scuffs it cleaned up ok and I used a cleaner wax to brighten up a tad.
So, the big "reveal" will have to wait at least a week. For while under the car all this time, I noticed the passenger rear wheel backing covered in what I believe is tranny oil. _________________ Volkswagen...Making mechanics out of owners since WW2.

Well, the time came to let Mom know. I didn't plan on today but as my Mom was leaving my house, my GF prodded me to show it to her at least:
She thought I was just showing off another car but as she got to the driver's side, I gave her the key and said, "It's your car, Mom. Your 65."
She immediately started crying in disbelief. She got in, ran her hands over the surface of the wheel and with her shaking hand, put the key in the ignition and turned.
The sound of the engine put a smile on her face and started crying at the same time. "It's beautiful!" she exclaimed.
I sat next to her and told her, "let"s go, put in reverse and drive it."
Her hand went instinctively to the seat adjuster lever, toed the clutch and away we went.
Aside from my son being born, this was the happiest day for me in a long while. _________________ Volkswagen...Making mechanics out of owners since WW2.

Thank you ...
I gave her a key and ring to take home with her tonight. I still have to fix an axle seal leak and get the horn to work so i will make the full delivery this weekend.
She deserves more than this car.

Don't know how long ago Mom was in the drivers seat of a bug, but it looks like it all came back to her. Love the shot of her backing out. Give her a hug from all of us. Thanks for posting. |
