Make sure you relocate those rocker covers properly when you've done the valve adjustment...move them side to side, up and down a little before you put those wire clips back on.

Every time, as shown me by Derek! Thanks!

Phil

Good to see you're on the road. I've been watching the progress on your Ghia, as HOG has mine also. Which, by the way, I will be driving to Mexico in October.

Just been talking to Phil on Facebook and he says everything is going fine...except he's having trouble uploading pictures to the Samba Gallery.

So..I said to email them to me and I'd do the rest and I have to say they look great:

He's on the road now having spent the night just over the CA border in Crescent City.

Click on the pictures and they'll show full size. Very Happy

Very nice!
Are those chrome rims with painted centers or just trim rings? I wish I was there with you driving my '61. Motor just got bolted up last week, still lacking some wiring and brake bleeding to be back on the road again. Looks like you're having a nice trip. Best of luck to you!

Thanks for posting those build pictures Derek!!!!.....my brand new 1384 is running like a top!
I was literally laughing out loud today on a down hill four lane divided part of the 101 highway I had all to myself and I could just pick my line and hit all the corners at top speed or in this case, 75 MPH.....and that was after I adjusted the valves before I left this morning.....Mr. Porsche was so good even I can't screw it up! Well - looks like you did pretty well too......

"just trim rings"....since you brought it up though....am thinking about painting the wheels white (roof matching?).....would be a blast to do this trip with another car/people.....that said, it'll be a pity if this is the only time I make this run!

The last pic Derek put up there is me (Phil) leaving HoG for the last time (this trip at least) after we had her all buttoned up......I notice all my clothes smell like exhaust, 'er I mean smell like "VW" .....I hope this an aphrodisiac? ha ha

And also more to come on the trip itself....had internet issues yesterday....today I lost my glasses.....as they say "eet's always soneting mang"......on the plus side though...had a 70ish woman yesterday in Myrtle Creek, Oregon (if you are out there - offer still is pending) propose she trade her late model Mercury straight up for my Ghia.....she added "Even I could still have a pretty good time on a Saturday night with that car....."
I was trying to adjust the valves in the hotel parking lot this morning (after 450 miles) and it took me an hour longer because friendly ppl kept coming up to talk about Ghia's and VW's......I get TONS of thumbs ups...."my wife wants me to get one for her" while I am getting gas, and even the retired guy at Walgreens in Crescent City had a 10 sec bug back in the day......this is SO much fun!!

Latest instalment comes in the form of a "Windows Live Gallery": https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=4da29500c2e17bf0&am...&sff=1
Might have to copy and paste the full url into the address window to get it to display.

As I'm not sure if you can view without being signed up for "Windows Live" I've downloaded 4 of the pictures.

Down amongst the giant Redwood in Northern California.

Thanks for sharing! Great looking ghia and boy is that thing SLAMMED! Laughing Nearly 20 years ago, I used to make a similar trip in my former 1969 ghia coupe several times a year between Tacoma, WA, and San Luis Obispo, CA. I chose US 101 and California State Route 1 whenever I had the time to enjoy it. I had power to spare w/ my 1776 and 4.125 ring and pinion, but I usually took I-5 down to Grants Pass and cut over to US 101 from there on.

PostPosted: Sun Sep 04, 2011 4:53 pm    Post subject: More Salem to San Diego Reply with quote

Alright, I'm back home in San Diego, made it safely Saturday afternoon the 27th. Was a really great trip, met some great people, had a few adventures and I will begin recounting what I did.
I'll start here with my actual trip, and I'll fill in some back story at a later time. Anyway, after enjoying Mike & his wife's hospitality on Friday and Saturday I was ready to begin my trip, and while it was already a long busy day on Saturday and having golfed 9 holes with Mike that afternoon, I decided to set out on a short target and head down the 5 freeway to Eugene for the night - about 75 miles - I really couldn't wait to drive her, ya know? Car ran like a top although I had my first experience pulling into the hotel with parking lot thresholds being more steep that the car can negotiate and scraping. I've got to stop doing that! The following morning, Sunday the 20th I set out around 9:30 continuing south to meet up with a couple I know that live in Myrtle Creek for a quick lunch. I doubled back the about 10 miles back up the 5 Freeway after eating to pick up route 42 over to Coos Bay. I will post some actual trip pics (as opposed to just the beauty shots posted so far) but remember I was alone and many of my pics were taken through my bug splattered windshield, but it was a spectacular drive and it's still a good idea to pay attention when driving. Central Oregon is really beautiful - for that matter everywhere I went in Oregon was striking.
