All the parts are painted in 2 pak John. Had to flatten out the paint so it didn't shine to much. |
2 pak? Isn't he dead?
<kidding>
You mean a 2 part? Or 2 stage? Enamel? Urethane? Manufacturer??
Curious as that is the color I want my '51 to be. And I don't want it too shiny either. _________________ John Henry

That's an urban myth John...where's the proof?

Drivers side door handle is also together now.
For some reason once fitted it didn't work correct.
the only thing i can see it the tab that works the lock on the inside of the door is shorter on this handle. I ended up pulling it apart and fitting one like on the passenger side and its all working fine. I might come back to this later as it was all working before with the short one before.
you can see the shorter tab here.

Headlights are fitted.
Again another problem and it was with the mounting screw tabs.
The shorter one wouldn't let the screw line up with the hole so i had to elongate the hole.
Once fitted you don't really notice. Again just working with what i have at this stage.
Also the front bumper is together and mounted.

The rear bumper is also on but i also opened up the holes to move the bumper back a bit. the crank mount on the top of the bumper was ever so close to the decklid.
I also fitted up the crack handle to make sure all was straight.
So now its time to wheel it out side in the morning and give it a wash.

It's my understanding that those "short tabs" or hooks as I call them were used on the 61-64 Bus pull handles. It's a little hard to tell from your photo if you have the long Beetle/early Bus version there or the late Bus short style one. Yours does look pretty short. Any how, just an observation. _________________ My Beetles :

I thought this one you've shown is for a later year too. My understanding is the type you should have has no recess around the key hole?
more like this type?

That would be correct as the part number on the handle starts with 211 making it a bus handle. Still only trying to make do with what I have for now but thanks for helping with pointing out the differences.
At least I know what to look for now. |

Found some time to wheel the car out and give it a wash.
Also gave it a cut and polish around the wheels ,bottoms of the doors and areas near the running boards. At some stage in its life someone blackened all the rubber with some sort of paint like stuff. They seemed to get it everywhere with brush marks and spatter etc. I'm sure they must have been blind.
Anyway no sooner than after it was washed and put back in the shed the phone rings.
Next the truck has arrived. Just had enough time to put some wax on and quick going over.
All loaded and tied down for the trip. 1822 KM / 1132 miles one way to Bisbane.
Safe trip |

Now while Volkswagen have my split they gave me a car to use.
I'm not really up to date on new Volkswagen models and when they asked me what i'd like I said something my kids will fit in. LOL No fun driving on my own!
So a smaller sporty vw was out of the question and you carn't afford to speed these days as it's so easy to get caught.
So this is what arrived on a truck today with onlt 2600km on the clock.
Its a Touareg V6 TDI Bluemotion
Oh who needs a sports car when you have one of these. |

The bluemotion is freaky at first, isn't it.
You won't want to give it back. _________________ ( ⫏ ⫐ )

Yeah its certainly is but I could get use to it.
Maybe when they ring to arrange to collect it I might say " I thought it was a clean swap" |

here where i live many old owners have the same line when it comes to selling their car, no matter the condition or value : "VW\Mercedes\Skoda etc will give me a brand new car for it , this car is a museum piece, and they usually give a new car in exchange. if you want it then you know the price"
it was a bit fun for me to see that VW gave you a brand new car for the beetle
on a side note, i asked the VW dealer here to keep my split in the showroom for a while (while i was building the garage or it was winter - easy free storage room ) but they said they do not really care about the old stuff, clients being only interested in new cars. it didn't matter either that my split is so far the only 1 out of 2 splits that still drives and looks restored to a level, and "the first series VW"
you'll like the new plastic, but the split is the one to keep and enjoy _________________ 1960 1200 model 117 deluxe ragtop

Done a few trips in the new Volkswagen. Its been real fun to have as its a great car and my kids love it. But I wouldn't swap for my beetle
Not far from where I live is Wilsons Promontory National Park where we spent the day.
Today I got a phone call and my beetle is back onboard the truck and on its way home. They said it should arrive about 4pm Sunday. |

Truck arrived as said and unloaded.
My beetle has now travelled across Australia a greater distance than me now
And here we are back in the shed.
The truck driver told me to check under the bonnet.
Thanks Volkswagen for taking good care of my car.
I look forward to seeing pictures from the event. |

Cool. I am not a fan of Corporate VW at all (especially VW of America), but that is pretty cool. Would love to see pictures from the event when you get them... _________________ John Henry
