I was reading through the 15 window thread and noticed that almost 20% of the buses listed were walk-thru models. It got me thinking, how many legitimate 23 window walk-thru models are known to exist. I did a little research and came up with some preliminary numbers we can start with. I started with the Thom's registry, then I searched the Samba gallery, the Samba classifieds and last I searched the Samba forums. Here is what I have so far:
1958 Double Door VIN - Unconfirmed, M-Codes - Unconfirmed
VIN MO/YR Color Unconfirmed 23 W/T

If anybody has pictures of these buses and/or the m-code plates, please post. I'm sure there are more that my searches didn't come up with so please post them, along with pictures and m-codes.
I will post pics of mine tomorrow _________________ Every Decision A Man Makes Has An Effect On The Sum Of His Life

I've added three more to my collection since 2006
I will note that I don't give out VIN #'s and the buses are in storage until I get caught up on customer projects.....so no pictures for quite some time.

I've updated the list with the ones submitted, we're up to 19 so far. Keep them coming, I know there are more out there. I know this won't be a long list but let's make it as complete as possible.

Most likely a fake......the front seats are the dead give away, early seats do not go over the bulkhead/seat stand. _________________ Transporter Restorations

This is the center bus featured in my avatar......I was contacted by a previous owner that was looking for his old bus. I'm not sure how long he was looking but he was definitely surprised that I had the bus and it had traveled less than 1000 miles since he sold it almost 20 years earlier.
After I did a bit of detail work, he regained ownership.
May 17th or 19th, 1963
I replaced it with the outward vent TUR/ BLW Feb of 63 walkthru mentioned above. _________________ Transporter Restorations

This 80's special is an original walkthru. The m-code plate was MIA, as a previous owner removed the seat stand backs in favor of bucket ricaro seats. It is a very early 62 or late Oct-Dec 61 with the "fat boy" bolted on drivers sliding seat. The bus is currently under going restoration by a private owner in California. So maybe he will chime in with more details. _________________ Transporter Restorations

This one came out of Colorado.....Grand Junction.
July 5th 1962
I spotted it during one of my late 80's buying trips, it was another 10 years before a round about deal was made to acquire it. Loads of NOS parts were assembled to restore it. This bus is also under going a complete restoration by a private owner. If he wants to chime in he has more information. _________________ Transporter Restorations

Received a call on this one about a year ago....this was a SUPER dry Arizona bus that was being converted into a truck? I had plans to rebuild it but.....it has been cut up to help save several other buses.

This bus was at several SOTO shows back in the day, shows in Colorado and driven alot. However, no one paid much attention to it because of the shabby 70's paint job. I met the previous owner at one of the Deer Park SOTO meets, he was curious about the strange paint code that no one could translate....this was in the late 80's early 90's. We kept in contact, eventually he called saying that there was a possible buyer for his bus, but he didn't feel comfortable with the deal. By the end of the conversation, we made an agreement.
So what did that strange paint code indicate......single color dove blue
Just last week I found NOS blue sunroof material for it
Now I can restore it

This 59 23 window walkthru, was restored way way back in 1988/89, to a level very few are able to achieve today. I was just getting my feet wet at this point so to experience the craftsmanship that went into this bus as well as participate in the restoration has had a lasting impression.
I would love to find out where this bus is today. _________________ Transporter Restorations

This 63 23 window walkthru was restored in 1998. I do not have records of the M-codes or build date.
The last information I heard this one now resides in Germany. _________________ Transporter Restorations

This bus was sold new at a Tucson dealership, purchased by the second owners in Tempe, AZ in 1966 or 67. A friend told me about this bus for several years. I finally contacted the elderly owner, who had skin cancer. He painted all the skylight windows, corner windows, several side windows in an effort to keep the sun from coming in. On occassion I would drive across town in my 52 deluxe to visit the owner. Eventually he passed away after a courageous fight against the skin cancer.
This was my college transportation bus for several years, I always parked off campus (free) so my mtn bike lived in the back. I made numerous trips to SOTO shows in this bus, trips to Mexico and New Mexico. Unfortunately college tuition forced the sale of this one to a local guy who planned to restore it, that plan didn't last long. It was then sold again locally to Hans and Dick Christensen. Hans drove it for several years before restoring/selling it to it's current owner/collector.
BTW, this is the bus that was recently used by VW in the short lived ad campaign.
It's long enough in the past I don't have any M-code information.
Another one I wouldn't mind getting back someday. _________________ Transporter Restorations
