I wasn't sure exactly where to put this. This seems like the best spot.
This whole story starts with my wife wanting a squareback in 2014. I originally looked at this car then, two owners ago, but couldn't come to a deal. I ended up getting a different 72 square, which unfortunately burned down along with my shop and almost everything else I owned in December of 2021.
So...I looked for a replacement. Nothing really tickled me, budget wise or near me. Then this car popped up on the local VW club Facebook page. The seller was a cool guy, and we had no problem making a deal. After thinking about it a bit, I realized it was the same one I looked at 8 years ago.
I had previously picked up a very wrecked 2008 R32, which I planned to Swap another car or build a giant go kart. When the square back came along, I changed that plan.

Since the squareback was so rusted out, it seemed logical to chop the body off the R32 and set the square shell over it. The biggest hurdle was the difference in wheelbase, almost 8". I thought about a few ways to approach fixing that, then a wrecked 2001 Audi TT fell in my lap. The wheelbase of the TT is almost perfect, only 1" different.
Now, the logical thing to do is to just use the comple TT drive train, but I wanted wookie (VR6) noises, and the DSG transmission. So, the new plan is to use the TT "chassis" and plant the VR6/DSG into it. To stiffen it up and make it a bit safer, I'll be adding a minimal interior cage. _________________ Matt Johnson

The first order of business was to get the R32 actually started. It took a hard hit and I was a bit concerned, but with a little wiring finagle, some jumper wires and some luck, it fired right up.
With that out of the way, it was time to get the drive train out. An hour later, here we are.
The next order of business is to get the TT blown apart. I'm hoping to have it ready to meet the squareback body this week. _________________ Matt Johnson
