Well, in order to have the proper tools for this build, as in AIR TOOLS, I need to start improving the "Shop". Keep in mind, I am not a professional mechanic, only a back yard wanna bee and DIYer. I'm pretty handy, tho....& can at least hold my own. I knew I would need at least a 60 gallon 5 hp compressor that put out over 10 cfm minimum at 90 psi. So I shopped around, including on Craigslist. What a joke. Guys are thinking their old junk is worth what a new one costs, minus the tax. WTF!?!?! And then you don't know squat about it's condition. I decided to shop around for a new one. I found a 10% off coupon to Lowe's at the Post Office (in their Mover's Packet --HOT TIP), signed up for Lowe's credit card and got another 10% on top of that for a whopping 20% discount. Got the Campbell Hausfield (CH) 220 volt jobbie. I found out this CH unit is exactly the same as the Home Depot Husky unit (in red). Literally, the motor they use is identical, only with the CH label. Bought all the associated piping, a few tools, etc. I decided that I didn't want it inside the garage and convinced the wifey that it be way better, and look good, on the outside. Plus it would be quieter:
There we go, color matched siding, roof, complete with 220 volt wiring, swithch and breaker installed. Got the boss's approval on this one....
Yeah, I know that insulation in there looks ghetto but it helps to keep the noise down. It really is very quiet. Thanks for looking....

That's true, I'm lucky to at least have a garage....
So I built a 12X12 shed in my backyard out of about 80% recycled lumber. I had to buy new roofing and siding and trim, but all the guts are recycled wood, high quality wood granted, but wood that came from industrial packaging. Stay tuned. _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

As promised, shed build pics. As i said, mostly recycled lumber was used. I also had some leftover paint, and the nice big vinyl window I bought off Craigslist for $40. I personally designed and built this shed, (ok, stole design from a shed book I bought from Lowe's ). But I DID pound every single nail and drove every screw. And yes the brown dog helped by dropping the ball on my foot as often as possible.
**ON EDIT, MY PICTURES WERE DELETED FROM THE SAMBA BY THE MODERATOR -- LOL, that is some funny stuff. But hey, that's presumably b/c they were not directly VW related. Now I know. Thanks for not deleting my compressor pics. Sorry everyone. Oh well, the thread will continue on!
Cheers, thanks for lookin'.

More photos of this Oval Rag's restoration place....notice the little goodies you'll see lying around, like Porsche Fuch wheels, an oval decklid, the start of my dolly, and one happy Oval. More details to come on everything, just trying to get everyone up to speed and, well, make an attempt to satisfy everyone's insatiable desire for pics. I promise, photos debicting ACTUAL WORK are on their way.
Here's what I got for now:
Anybody see a correct H-pattern rear apron clip in this one?
The side supports of my dolly with wheels are on the floor, along with a messy garage. Wheels, decklid, and a auto-retracting air hose reel are in there too:
here you get a better view of the items mentioned above, plus two period-correct MINT rear pop-out windows I bought. Got 'em from MarkM, from whom I also bought the car....Thanks Mark...
Hope you enjoy, thanks for lookin'

Well, back with more progress....not a ton, but significant nonetheless. So the plan here is to take the body back OFF the pan so i can restore the pan and the body separately. Plus, I have space restrictions with only a two car garage. Wifey parks her car in garage #2. (I know, i am lucky to have two -- a lot of you guys have no garage or one small one. Hats off to you alll ) Anyway, the plan was to build a dolly that allowed the rolling chasis pan to fit under the body . The dolly had to be wheeled to allow it to be mobile, but short enough to still fit in the garage! Here are pics of the dolly next to the car:
Here, I got help from a few friends to remove the body again. Notice there are two Sallies on the left....and just me on the right
.
Finished product, and yes thank goodness all my measurements were spot on, the dolly and body fit in the garage!
Not very exciting, but I used a tow bar to take the rolling pan to the local pressure washer to wash off 50+ years of grime. This is the final result, a clean rolling chasis:
thanks for lookin',

So now the real work begins. I have to admit, I started this project as a total amateur. I'm a pretty good handy man when it comes to working around the house, even remodeling a kitchen, bath, or installing floors, etc. But I have pretty limited autobody experience. Like many of you guys, I grew up around cars and learned to love them, VWs inluded obviously . BUT, my family's financial background was such that any cars I thought were cool growing up, **DID NOT** belong to us . I was lucky and at least had a car in HS, and friends and I worked on them ourselves and we had a lot of fun. ANYWAY, enough of the life story. I wanted to take matters into my own hands. I did the college thing, got thru that and now I have a career and a day job. Now I want some schooling in the fun stuff. So I looked into taking autobody instruction from the local community college(s). There are many out there, but most did not have a decent autobody program, and if they did, they didn't offer night class which was mandatory. I got super lucky when I found a WA state community college about 1 mile from where I work that HAS NIGHT CLASS! Freakin' cool. So they are on the quarter system, and offer one night class each quarter (around $300), and none during the summer. Class is on Tuesdays from 6 to 10p, PERFECT. Get out of the house, hang out with a bunch of hobbyists like me, talk shop, BS, have fun, learn the ropes, AND GET WORK DONE on your own project! Stay tuned, you'll see what I mean. Now, the financial situation is a little different, but like many of you out there I still can't afford to pay someone to do all my restoration work for me! It is freakin' expensive! Just the materials and parts to do a restoration are waaaay up there $$$. Anyway, if any of you guys are like me and want to learn how to do some or all of the work yourself, then I highly recommend hooking up with a local trade school, vocational institution or community college, if it's available to you. What you learn lasts a lifetime. Thanks for looking....(is anybody out there? ) LOL

Ok, work continues.....now it's time to get this pan broken down for restoration, this means all brakes, brake lines, the tranny, e-brake, EVERYTHING must go....
First let's get it properly jacked up...
a shot of how smooth and perfect the body-to-pan mounting surfaces are, how much undercoating they used, etc. etc..
close up of the split case tranny, all the brake lines, 6v starter, etc.... Non of the crap u see would pressure wash off for NOTHIN'....
crimoney, these may be the original shocks
Got a helper to do some of the grunt work.... My nephew!
Making some progress on the backside. Tranny and axles are out....
Now let's knock the front end off. Goal: take this beam off FOR THE FIRST TIME IN IT'S LIFE:
I know gory details, bet most of you guys are bored stiff, but thanks for lookin' anyways!

More pan disassembly work.
Here's a shot of the front of my pan, beam still in place. Already removed are tie rods, brake parts, pedal assembly, master cylinder, etc. Stock spindles and link pin spindles are seen dangling from the stock control arms, etc. All rust you see is surface only. I continue to find VERY MINIMAL rust on this car...
Here is a pic of the front of the pan, looking at the front tunnel access cover:
Beam removed! :
Questions, comments from anybody out there are welcome. This is my first ever rebuild of any car, let alone a beloved VW. Let me know what you guys think!
