I've heard stories about coils breaking off if they're mounted to the fan shroud because the metal is too thin. That being said, mine is mounted to the fan shroud and so far no problems...

I'm going to guess that a lot of broken fan shroud/coil mounts are as much to do with the vibrations caused by solid mounts as are caused bh off road impacts. I've yet to relocate mine, bit it has minimal time on it with rubber mounts and an adjustable trans strap.

If the movie Contact has taught us anything, its as easy to build two as it is one. Build a second coil mount while you're there and you can run a spare if you want.

A suggestion is to replace that one pushrod you bent and strightened. No matter how well it is straightened, the metal stretched when it bent, and it will be the weak link in the chain. I have done it before, and learned the hard way.

As for mounting the coil, keep the main lead as short as possible. The longer the lead, the more resistance it creates.

It turns out the item I could not identify with my carb kit was a coil relocation mount that situates the coil between the distributor and the doghouse by means of attaching to the case bolt there. Easy enough, and probably a better place than the stock location.

Does anyone sell individual push-rods? These are chromoly.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Motor together, wiring complete, gas lines in tact, gas tank in place. Valves adjusted and battery charged. Need to set initial timing and see if it will crank. Gonna sleep on a safety checklist and read some initial carb setup info.

Looks Great!

Did you fill the oil filter with oil before installing?
Check the sump plate to make sure tightened.
All oil lines tight.
Alternator Pulley Nut tight.
All fuel line clamps tight.
All 4 bolts in bellhousing and tightened.
All carb base nuts tight.

Do have a question, the fan shroud hoses look to be plastic coated, if they are won't they melt around the exhaust tubing where it comes out of 2 and 4 cylinder side of the heads?

I got custom length pushrods from Crane through my FLAPS. I'm sure they'll sell individuals. (I bought 9 of each size for a 460 ford project)

I HAVE filled the oil filter.
7lbs on each sump plate bolt (switched to a billet for superior flatness).
oil lines are too tight to move.
Alt pulley needs a bit more tightening, I think... should I be able to turn the crank with the alternator nut on a serpentine?
fuel lines are tight
bellhousing secure
carbs are tight.

RE: Pushrods, bought a grab bag of crap from a guy at work that included nine pushrods. So I replaced them til I figure out what to do with the chromoly 7 I have. I have not put on the 1.25 rockers, yet. I want to make sure everything works as close to stock as possible and was worried a bit about pushrod tube clearance with the 1.25's.

I need to adjust the clutch, make sure it's not in gear and that should be about it.

Question: What about the oil filler tube hole for the pressure stuff that normally has a hose that runs to the bottom of the air filter? What should I do with that hole?

That question can become a hotly debated topic.

Some say to pipe it into the top of your right carb filter. Some say to run it to a crankcase breather/vent box. Some plumb it into the header collector to pull a vacuum on it. Some put a filter directly on it.

Make sure water cannot get in, (if stored outside).

It will vent the crankcase vapors. Since your engine is new and will create some blow by until the rings are seated, you may want to direct it away from the general area so it does not spew oil vapors onto that clean engine.

no fire at starter (or no spin at starter) Sad Any suggestions? I haven't checked fuses yet and will have to look at a wiring diagram to see if there IS one. The dash lights dim when I turn the ignition key, but no spin from the rear happens. Didn't smell smoke, either.

Electrical things I did do...
removed voltage regulator, bound the three wires there together (3 big red ones, one went straight to the battery, one went towards the front of the car, and one went to a relay for, I think, the rear window defrost). The big wire to the starter seems intact, I get fire in other places (so I don't think it's a ground issue). And I joined the green and blue wires from the regulator together. The green wire goes to the alternator. There is a big red wire that goes to the alternator and then to a 70 amp fuse I installed, on the other end of that is the 3 big red wires previously mentioned.

I'm starting to think it is the ignition key switch, the original of which was ripped out of the car and tossed to God knows where. The shop that didn't want to pony up for the motor loss was good enough to throw in a key switch so I could at least turn the steering wheel and I am 100% certain that this switch is of the highest quality. Or, more likely, the opposite of that. I'm 100% certain it is one of those things. So is there a quick, easy way to hot wire the starter just to see if it works? How do I determine if it is the starter or the switch?

Hot wired it. Probably ignition switch, I guess, because starter turned over and car tried to run. Will try again tomorrow! Have to get a new ignition switch but in the meantime I can get to tuning it.

Ha, cool. Thanks for checking on the progress! It's supposed to be pretty nice today so I will get it tuned up a bit better and then turn my attention to the front end which is in shambles. God, I hope this works.

this afternoon has been terrible. First off I found gas under the car this afternoon... fuel pressure regulator leaking terribly. Lost a gallon of gas replacing the line from the back of the car to the T, all in my eyeballs.

Moved the car out of the garage so I wouldn't die from CO poisoning and now ... SCREECHING http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=496071
