A friend of mine found this surprising piece of advice.
though I dare say heard of already by a few
still I'm a but sceptical
what's the physics behind this?

Most motorists will turn on the HIGH or FASTEST wiper speed during heavy downpours, yet the visibility in front of the windshield is still bad.

In the event you face such a situation, put on your SUN GLASSES Any model will do. All of a sudden, the visibility in front of your windshield is perfectly clear, as if there is no rain.

Make sure you always carry a pair of SUN GLASSES in your car. You are not only helping yourself to drive more safely with good vision, but also might save your friend's life by giving him this idea.

Try it yourself and share it with your friends! You still see the drops on the windshield, but not the sheet of falling rain. You can also see where the rain bounces off the road This also works to eliminate the "blindness" from passing vehicles spraying you and the "kickup" if you are following another car, truck or tractor trailer rig.
They ought to teach this tip in driver's training .. it really does work.

I'm going to try this, as it rains a lot here and my old vans wipers can not cope with heavy rain very well.

Sorry if this advice has been discussed before

reminds me of the blues brothers.......

I can't see it working in any way except making you see even less of the road.

What about when the plod pull you over.....

"excuse me sir, why were you wearing sunglasses when the visibility was down to under 100 yards and everyone has their lights on?"

"It's Ok officer, wearing sunglasses makes it like it was a sunny day with no rain. It's like it wasn't raining at all"

"OK sir, would you mind blowing into this tube......."

if it's raining so bad that i can't see then i pull over in my van and make some coffee/tea/ sandwich or more elaborate 7 course meal/read a book/listen to some music and stay where i'm at till i can see where i'm going.

it even happens that i'm in a real nice spot and i stay there for several days. no, i don't have any sunglasses. Smile

That's actually against the law in most states.

That's because you probably didn't clean and apply it right.

You have to first get all car wax and silicone off the glass, and out of the pores. Ammonia or a good commercial glass cleaner work well. Let it dry, then apply two coats of Rain-X, letting each dry FULLY before buffing. It appears to evaporate quickly, but it remains wettish for a long time after this. I apply it then let it sit in the sun (obviously not a workable plan if rain is imminent!)

Then vigorously buff off all traces of the hazy film. You will feel the smoothness, but you should not see ANY haze when looking at or through the glass. If any is left on the surface it can smear when wet.

Applause Applause

What he said.

Applied correctly, Rain-X is great. Applied incorrectly, it smears and really sucks.

Fog-X? Just plain sucks, no matter how you apply it.

Never had that problem. As KTPhil said, I've always started with good clean windows.

i got stuck in a tornado outside of amarillo last time i was going to houston. i had just put rain-x on my windshields. my friend erik helped me apply it properly before i left. my wipers were on full blast, but the rain-x saved my ass. all the semi's and other drivers were pulled over. i was doin 35, but i was the only one still driving. my dog pissed the seat but other than that everything was fine.

When it is raining that hard, it is time to pull over and stop.
The Truck drivers are professionals, and they usually do the right thing.

nah, the truck drivers can't be bothered to put the wank mag or beer down to concentrate enough on the road, thats why they stop. Oh, and they get paid for it too Wink

Unfortunately, many truck drivers are far from professionals these days. Ask any cop.

Rain X works, but on a split bus it causes a blob of water to sit right at eye level for me when driving on the highway. The roof overhang screws up the water-flowing-off-the-windshield theory. Rain-X sucks at night when you need to use the wipers at slow speeds. It leaves a sheen on the glass that you cannot see through. Yes, I have applied it properly.

Good wipers are better, and getting off the road when you can't see anything ahead of you is better yet.

Maybe they are just taking of advantage of the situation to pull over and do a little crystal meth. Cool
