I'd definitely pay that for one right now. _________________

I remember, years ago, reading an article where someone built a new frame and floor into a mid-sixties Chevelle and stuffed one of these things into it. Musta been a helluva ride! I loved the sound of these in the old P-38s.

Somewhere, I have an old Hot Rod Magazine, that had on the cover, a car called "Quad Al"... it was a Fiat Topolino body, like the Altered cars use, with not one not two not three but FOUR of those Allison V-12 motors...
I kid you not, I wish I could find that photo, I'll bet you could Google it and find it...
<edit> yep, there's quite a few photos when you Google it... here's one:

Holy smokes! You weren't kidding. That makes Tommy Ivo's wagon look like a Fiat 500.
You know what else I like about that Allison ad? Starters and generators- $5.00 each. |

I actually watched "TV" Tommy Ivo's "Showboat" dragster make a pass at the long-gone Ramona Dragstrip, in North San Diego County, back when it was first built. It had four Hilborn-injected Buick Nailhead engines in it, and was 4 wheel drive, an Tommy smoked all 4 tires, the full 1/4 mile. Later on, the car got, IIRC, a Buick Station Wagon body and front end.... _________________ 2003 Samba Chummie Winner- Best Story

In a comment on that photo, someone mentioned the Blastolene Special (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blastolene_Special), which according to that wiki article, has an engine that weighs the same as..you guessed it, the VW Beetle. Coincidence? I think so. _________________ 74 Super Beetle w/1500SP - project.

The surplus allison engine made me think of a local store owner who was a bomber navigator in WWII. At the time, the latest and best bombsite was a Norden (sp?) and the crew was told if they ever crash and survive, destroy the bombsite before you do anything. It cost something like $10,000 and was highly accurate. At the end of the war this veteran bought one as surplus for $25.00. He proudly displayed it in his store until his passing several years ago. _________________ 67 zenith blue sunroof

Are you sure it wasn't a 55ish Bel-Air? I remember reading a build thread on that car in my early interweb days, and it was (is?) The coolest f@cking car I had ever seen. Complete with airbrushed rivets, panel lines, and even tiger teeth! Man, I wish I still had that link.
To the original post, was this the same engine as in the P-51 Mustangs too? I'll be the first to admit I don't know too much about WWII airplane engines... _________________ (O\U|U/O) Top Vw (o\UU/o) |

Nope, the one that I saw was a mid-sixties Chevelle. I am sure there were several different builds of several different cars with stuff like Allisons in them. Those early hot rodders were kinda nuts with this stuff.
BTW, P-51As used the Allisons, but they switched to Packard Merlins (a Rolls Royce Merlin produced under license) in the P-51Bs. More power at high altitudes and a higher ceiling IIRC. _________________ Mike

Yep, while searching out the Bel-Air, I found some other folks talking about the Chevelle, and other cars too. I still can't find the build on it, but here's some info on the 55.

The Rolls engineers were stunned that Packard could take what was a hand built engine with more than 22,000 parts and mass produce it with a lower failure rate.
There are a ton of Packard Merlins around still. The only problem with them is they were used in the Unlimited Hydroplanes and the plane guys are real leary of the abuse the cranks and blocks were put through. |

yep some lunatic he was
A 27 litre V-12 with 4 valves per cylinder, double overhead cams, originally with a supercharger (later higher-altitude versions had two in line superchargers).
This model has the supercharger removed and an American 4-barrel Holley carburettor fitted.
The engine produced over 1.000 bhp when new or 775 Kw.
bit wobbly round corners though |
