What about assembly for the European headlights with the smaller 'bulbs' instead of the American 7" round ones? I pulled the headlight assembly out to inspect, and saw the myriad of tension springs, etc. and was a little baffled. It seems there is more 'pieces' to the American version.

Dumb ??? - My wife had restored a set of these for her 61 and I love them - but the repros I got for my 65 seem very cheesy with coil springs on the adjusters. Did VW change the style later or just that the new repros are crappy? Just curious.

The European is similar in that the bucket of the headlight is held to the outer chrome trim by those springs. The difference being that the reflector is seperate to the bulb.

I also like the look of the fluted outer lens as opposed to the clear outer lens.

I'm not aware of VW changing the adjusters for those headlights. Just the repros use a cheaper method to do things.

Thanks for the post and pics. From your pics I realize I am missing the tension spring on the ligts for my 65. I had to wedge washers between the two pieces to adjust them right. I don't like "rigging" things so this will help, I hope.

I had a post similar to this about 2 years ago.. Not as detailed though... Great write up!

BTW. I found it easier to put the long side of the spring in first then the short side. It takes most of the spring tension off so you don't put an eye out.

Those rubber sleeves are for the later style headlight buckets, with the diagonal adjusters, not the early ones talked about previously in this thread.

I'd not seen WW's writeup about those before, or if I had, I'd forgotten it.

I did take some detail photos though of this style headlight bucket for reference some time ago (I have some NOS German buckets as well as some India-made knockoffs)

The pieces you are referring to, those are sort of a poor design, each bucket has two rubber sleeves that the adjuster arms poke through. Then another one across from the adjusters that the bulbholder pivots on. And these are all inside a metal/glass enclosure that has a bulb that produces lots of steady heat - it's surprising they don't fail more quickly than they do. Hella's rubber sleeves must have been of an appropriate quality to withstand it. Now, I don't know how well WW's replacement sleeves hold up compared to the originals. (I've had some less-than-great experience with some of WW's rubber/vinyl parts before, about the only things I've ever had any issue with from them)

Maybe these photos will help you see where those rubber sleeves go on the diagonal-adjuster buckets.

Nice writeup!

Apparently, while taking apart my driver's side headlight to adjust it (screws were not working), I found out that it is missing the retaining ring...where is the best place to buy that?

These old clear glass buckets just seem to be begging to be mated with a modern HID projector. Anyone found a good mount to adapt the Hella HID projectors to the 7inch sealed beam retaining ring? This combo would give great vintage looks with modern lighting performance.

great right up, i did my 62 a few months back and used a good grey that was about the same color as stock, but had a light metallic to it, but not silver, it really woke up the light at night! i tossed the can when i was done and i dont remember the color, it was a duplicolor paint though, one of those small cans, i bought at pep boys probably 10 yrs ago and it was just sitting in my paint cabinet, i cant remember what i bought it for in the first place either Confused , but ill figure it out it was a ford color i think

Everett asked me two years ago to post my headlight restoration for my 65 single cab and to post it here with some pictures. Remember this is for a bus and not a bug. Cool
I`m thinking it was the rubber plugs that I made that he wanted me to show and where to get them so here you go.

Heres what I did to replace the old rubber bought O-ring stock 8mm I think make sure and check it from McMaster-Carr for less then $10.00 per foot and made my own. Heres the old and dryed rubber that couldn`t be saved.

Heres the O-ring that I used.

So finally got back to working on the car...here is a photo of all of the parts from my driver's side headlight (sealed beam bulb excluded, which is still connected to the car):

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

As I said, no apparently retaining ring, and the only springs that I found were sitting at the bottom of the fender recess.

The passenger side is better (it's assembled at least, with springs), but still no ring:

Only 4 springs on the inside and 4 on the outside.

Does anyone know the best place to buy my missing parts, or entire headlight assemblies? Thanks.

A neat way to not get sproinged by those pesky springs when you take them out is to cover it with a shop rag before you sproing it. However safety glasses are always in order when working on things under tension, (said the blind mechanic to his Deaf and mute helper).

It goes right between the h/lamp lip on the fender. You can kinda see it in this pic.
