Hi, I have a 54 Oval that was completely restored in the late 90s and I’ve had it around 10 years. What can I use to stop the heat transfer to the cabin from the engine bay ? What did VW use in the pillars either side of the window and what is best now. I’ve seen somewhere that expanding foam is good but that’s not what I want to use. Thank you, Paul |

vw used pillows made of headliner stuffed with wadding which were pushed into the rear roof gap. do not use spray foam as it can lead to rust problems. apply waxoyl or other rustproofing to the area before inserting new pillows.
this advert shows pics of them https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1742547
and this thread discusses them https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0 _________________ "we're here on Earth to fart around" kurt vonnegut

There are many options that you can install under the carpet. While not "period correct", I can tell you that they do make the ride much more enjoyable. I have some off brand thermal mat under the firewall carpet on my 62 rag and it quieted the 2 liter engine down and cut the heat transfer noticeably. For the foam pillow area, I rolled up some bubble wrap and jammed in in the hole. I told myself it was a temp solution at the time but 8 years later it still works, so... _________________ modok wrote:

Thank you, i guess mine were taken out in restoration. I have mouse holes in the head liner around the window. I wonder if memory foam would do,I could do with some new pillows |

Thank you, it has the wool type insulation underneath the carpet, I’ve been thinking of changing it as it’s like a sponge when wet. |

sounds like you need new window rubber if the carpet's getting wet - assuming no holes in the floor... _________________ "we're here on Earth to fart around" kurt vonnegut
