Such a nice day like this does not come very often in South Louisiana. Perfect temps, dry air as it will get here and plenty of sun. Perfect for my backyard (or driveway since I dont have a real backyard) rustoleum restoration to begin. Baby Blue had some pretty bad paint cracking and some large rust spots, but the body is still very solid. So, I figured since I can't afford a REAL paint job, I could at least try to help protect the body for a few more years this way.

Don't hate it because it's beautiful! Laughing

Notice the nice overspray in the engine compartment--nice touch:

I did two coats of primer. Overall I'm happy with the primer and how it went on. It cost me $9. Hopefully, tomorrow I will be able to sand it down AGAIN and lay down at least the first coat of some "high end" rustoleum GLOSS WHITE paint!

How are you applying this paint? Spray or roll on?

Looks nice so far.

Since everything here is real high end and high class, I have gone with a $15 spray gun from harbor freight!

When I painted my sportster, I also used a cheapo gun from harbor, and it came out really nice!

Thanks! I'm no "painter," but that doesn't keep me away from the sander and that paint gun! Shocked Hopefully, Baby Blue will actually be the better for it!

The whole key is you will have the pride and satisfaction of doing it yourself. An added bonus is the money you are saving.

A win-win situation.

Maybe it's just me, but your before picture, with the headlight covers, makes it look like it is frowning, but the after pictures without them makes it look wide eyed and smiling.

That's kinda what I was thinking except I put it more like this: before=stoned looking and after=revived looking! Smile

I have to say that I was actually pinging my wife on the idea of rolling it with just straight primer on it but she didn't like it so much. I think it kinda looks...real--as in "keepin it real." It's not a fancy car and it's not in show condition. The flat just emphasizes "basic." I like it, but alas in a 1-1 vote, my vote loses. Sad

Yes! That is what I think! I'm suprised that I haven't gotten any hecklers--yet anyway! Wink

my 74 was the first paint project I've undertaken - done with 2 harbor freight guns - first was the cheapo $15 gun - I messed that one up - (didn't clean it well enough)
learned lesson but did buy the next level up that came with both the
'big' gun as well as the detail gun.
Overall - I'm very happy with how the gun did.
have fun.

Primer is porous, so you gotta put paint over it anyway. My next project is getting slammed and painted flat. It's a sweet look IMO...

Show the boss this pic, see if she likes it...

The HVLP gun? What pressure did you end up spraying at? I have an 8 gallon HF compressor, which states it's rated at 6.0scfm at 40psi. Think it would run that gun?
Did you thin the paint?

Do you have any pics of the paint process?
