Mine looks like this:
and this
It's more ugly b/c a PO touched up the paint w/ a more colour stable paint and now it's old ugly colour mixed w/ nice original colour w/ chips all around and probably some rust under neath.
And, to add to David's (THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!) instructions, rather than his useful and wonderful hand written board w/ the screws--which I'm going to use in the future w/ pictures of it added in. Since, he already did the hard part and kept record of it and then shared it, I used that and stapled my screws (in zip lock bags) to the page w/ the instruction (complete w/ picture words). So, now if I'm lucky I'll be able to put it back together, myself.
One last question for putting it back together, from above. What kind of 17mm socket did you use? I had two, one was longer, but both were too short to fit over the stove plug pin, so it wouldn't turn/move. Even if I pushed on it to make the stove pin go in. So, I had to use a wrench. Not a problem for taking it off, but not ok to put it back on. It'll scratch it and I'll have a stroke, then cry. At any rate, the one you had in the picture looks like mine, just a regular old socket, not an elongated one. I have elongated ones, but not in the size I need. No idea how/why I had a 2nd different 17mm socket, both have different slots. One is just a hex and the other one has more slots (lots of star points).
Thanks so much everyone!

Removing/installing the retaining nut on the stove valve, if you look closely you will see that I cheated with the ratchet, not fully inserting the driver into the socket.
OR for about $12ish harbor freight will sell you this set

Ooohhhh, so obvious once you point it out! Thank you, thank you and thank you again! I'd have paid the hour labour to have it removed and thought nothing of it if it weren't for your pictures and detailed explanation!
I already have a set of those fancy long ones, just no 17mm one, mostly just the Imperial sizes, so maybe I do need a set of those. The things I should have taken from dad's shop before he retired! LOL _________________ 1987 Vanagon Westfalia GL Automatic

Thanks for posting a photo of your "before" stove. You may win for most improved when this is over. Maybe others can post their "before" photo of the stove to see how bad these things get.... _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia, stock (bought 1994)

Hi I'm interested in doing this for the grey group. Wondering if you can powder coat the lower metal piece below the fridge at the same time?
What would the cost be for both parts?
Thank you, Adam _________________ '87 Westfalia

I've followed the helpful illustrated instructions, but for some reason my faceplate doesn't seem to want to come off. When I pull out the bottom half from the right side, it appears to be "stuck" a bit to the left of the left burner knob. I can also get a flat-headed screw driver between the bottom of the left edge and the molding, but the whole plate won't pull forward. Any suggestions? We're with the Wetwesites group organized by Colleen Easley with shipping box in hand and want to ship it down.
Thanks. Joan |

Usually the top of the face plate gets stuck to the edge of the stainless steel stove top. I've resorted to using liquid wrench or PB blaster to get this to unstick itself. Also with a great deal of care, tapping the top edge of stove face with a rubber mallet might help to free these parts. You run the risk of breaking the stove valve stems if the face breaks loose while using force. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia, stock (bought 1994)

i had to use a rubber mallet to tap my stove face loose. Pull out the bottom of the stove face and tap down on the top of the stove face. it took a few taps in my case but it eventually let go. _________________ '84 Westy - 2.2wbx, GT Torque-Biasing Differential

I can't get the cover plate out. The bottom pulls out an inch or so, but the top seems firmly attached to the stove. I have an 86, could it be permanently welded? Glued by the PO? I tried whacking from the bottom.
I'm trying to do the "Cutlery drawer" mod. I guess I could try sawing out a 2" x 4" hole with the plate intact.
thx

You need to tap the top edge. Read below.

You need to pull out from the bottom and then downward. There is a lip on the stove panel that hooks into the stove top. _________________ Dale and Colleen

Rubber mallet struck with more than a light tap at various places along the top. I found that having more than two hands involved in this helped a lot. |

Won't that just come off when they media blast and powder coat? Or do they not paint the back? _________________ Dale and Colleen
