hi, im driving a early 67 bug and i wanna let you have part on my second engine build project. the first project i began to bild at the age of 19 was a 1600 singleport Solex 34PCI twin carbs engle w110 camshaft eg.
just one picture thatfor. this old engine just gave me a 18.7 in the quarter i had to move on and realize a better concept
to the project. in fact im one of those guys that belive "the power is in the head(s)" and therefor the first thing i had to do was building more better flowing heads.
inspired by the things that andi (oval56) had done i started on my own heads
first step was welding the heads at the flange area.
second step was planing the flanges
same on the manifolds
because i wanted to be sure the manifolds always fit in the right spot i build in some bushings around the bolts.
this picture shows the diameter increase from 28 to 35mm
same like the manifolds i did on the heads an vio la i thight fit
notice the diameter
a long time of porting followd. it took so long that i had sore hands.
the last step of porting was blowing the valve seats to inlet 40mm outlet 35.5mm
because i wanted to have more flow but the aperture of the 34pcis i decided to use first is limited by the 28mm venturi i had to change to bigger ones. i was very lucky to find a pair of solex 40pdsit r+l out of the 914 porsch in good used condition. i just had to replace the bronze bushings and new gaskets are allready orderd.
the pic shows the difference in size of 34pci and 40pdsit
the orgin of the manifold is tde (theo decker essen) a real oldschool german tuner. those mf where designd to be used in combination with solex 34 pci carbs. so the upper diameter was about 35mm. the problem now was how to fit those new bigger carbs on the old small MF including the rotated flange by 90°. the solution was a aluminium part - billet style
now i could go to mock up stadium for building the linkage whats still in progress.
see ya later sorry for the bad english (8years outta school) |

sorry guys to much work to keep you up to date...
last sunday i ripped my old engine build out of my car for disassembly and rebuilding with the new heads.
the last days were marked by cleaning stuff and store it on the floor in lack of space beside my 65notch resto :/
as you can see on the next pic the engine i build three years ago had some problems with oil coming from the valveguides cus for flow i just cut em of. damn naive but ye i was nineteen...
for avocation i just had to penetrate my cnc mill for some serious stuffs - milling the cambers down to 38cc and machining the last cooling fin to get clearance to the barrels.
for some reason i couldnt go home without bringing my personal stamp onto it. here it is the official "Lorenz Racing Head"
because i was scared the valves would hit the pistonliner while travelin over tdc i just put the old bearings into the case and put it together just to see my brother who calculated with kinky math formulas that they wont hit was right. there is more than enough space so i can even run a hotter cam. but we'll see.
the good thing that i have the shortblock on my workbench is that i can fit the sheetmetal. i had to shorten the cooling tin about 2-3mm in length and enlarge the channel for the manifold
tomorrow comes for sure and brings alotta work with it. gotta sleep now bye kids |

Tolle Arbeit, Loor! Thanks for sharing with us, and please keep us updated!
Art's '66 Beetle was as clean in person as it looks in his photos. I first saw it (and met him) at a VW meet in San Jose California, having driven it from his home area in Utah- probably about 800 miles, right Art? That's 1400 kilometers...
I've got relatives in downtown Stuttgart; my cousin Wolfgang worked on Beetles (stock, not modified) in the early 1980's but he also had a 914 4-cyl. for which he installed a strong 911 engine.

guten tag die herren
as i promised: updates
this week i had a lot of measuring and cleaning parts. after all of that real timewasting but essential work i was ready to reassemble the shortblock.
in this picture you can see the xcut camshaft wheels wich i have replaced with straightcuts just for the nois
bolted together
after coming clear what exhaust to use (its going to be a 1 1/2" merged header with phatboy muffler) i just had to fit the exhaust ports to 35mm (1 3/8" which is the inner diameter of the header)
after the lastminute exhaustporting i finally was able to put the heads togerther the next picture shows a hd singlespring and my new single extremes i use now
headassembly with hometools
notice: the 2gramms each lightend spring retainers.
man behind the curtain (me) while assemble the shortblock
checking endplay
thats it for now. i'm still waiting for the carb gaskets, jets and linkage.
all other stuffs good to go. im curious for the time it runs the first time. cant wait for it but its still fucking snowy around here so i think there are a few months to wait for better weather
guten tag
greetings from the good old motherland |

That motor looks great.
Please post video of the motor when you run it. I want to hear the straight cut gears whine!
Have a good Xmas.
