Is the automatic transaxle starter stronger than the standard transaxle one or just beefier? I know the one for the auto transaxle has a beefier nose but is it noticeably more powerful? I ask because the specs for the auto ones (Rock Auto) state that they're .8kw while the standards are all .7kw. Why would that be? |

The autostick starter, SR17, is self supporting, meaning you don't need the pushing in the transaxle housing, and it has more torque than the SR15 starter. _________________ Glenn

Ok, so now I know that I'm reading the specs correctly and the auto trans one is more powerful in addition to being beefier. Why did Volkswagen put a more powerful one on the auto version versus the standard one? My best guess is that it's because they figured that if all else fails, you could push start the standard transaxle version. |

I can guess. It was a more modern design and the torque converter may have had more resistance than a standard trans in neutral. |

Yeah, that's as good as anything I've come up with. Oh well. I bought the auto one from Napa. I was surprised at how much larger it was. Not just the gear head but the the body was longer and bigger around. I installed it and it starts my car much faster than before. My engine is a Ford V6 so it could use the extra starting power. |
