Took out the door locking mechanism on a 69 bug.....the little spring that pulls the indent cam into position so the door stays shut, it broke suddenly.......replaced it with another spring I had laying around......what a PIA that was. _________________ Currently own : 1969 Beetle w/ 1600cc, Single Port, Solex 30 PICT 2, Dist. 113 905 205 T, stock exhaust.

bealeve it or not I actually worked on it ..... well I saw some shocks in the classifieds and bought them the guy said they had less than 100 miles on them. I asked if they were stiff or soft, he said soft. I have the kgb gr2's on there & wanted somethen softer... so I put them on....I cant tell any diff at all oh well thats not entirely true these are nice and white, dont even look like they were ever installed on anything. well atleast i got a deal on them. I almost never work on this car.but this wasent a repair and not realy needed and took all of 10 min. so....it was just a break in the action. |

I changed my rear fuel hose, steel fuel line and firewall grommet and installed my carburetor I got from Tim at http://www.volkzbitz.com/.
The carburetor fired right up and the engine runs great. I highly reccomend Tim for a great carburetor and excellent shipping, Thanks Tim.
I also changed my old starter out with a new Bosch starter and added a new battery and ground strap. Car starts up perfect. _________________ 1968 Bug. |

Replaced the shoddy positive battery cable.
Tightened up both negative and positive cables.
Keeping my fingers crossed, that that will solve starting issues.
Next up to tackle: oil leak, appearance, tailpipe.

Mine was somewhat hard to start even after the new ground strap and a new battery and alternator. But when I installed a new starter, it started up much better. I'm thinking that the old starter must have had more of an amp draw than the new one or something. _________________ 1968 Bug. |

Hello, new guy here.
I bought a 1994 1600 bug (I really wanted a 1984-86, but they are very scarce around here, and the ones you get are rust held together by bad paint) and it's in a somewhat good condition. I aim to restore it to my liking, diving and surfing for parts wherever I can find them.
I'm in Mexico, so it's a MexiBeetle. Here are the pictures:
Not crazy about the steering wheel. I want either the 80's or the 90's one. Also, speedometer needle registers 80kph when you're really doing 70 or so.
Pedals need a bit of love and the brakes are a bit on the low side. Of course, I won't run the car over 80 kph until I know how good or bad the engine is. Also, the parking brake is shot. I think the wire broke and was never replaced.
The stick shift moves waaay too much to the sides when it's on gear for my liking, so that's on the "to do" list.
Also, radio. Maybe a classic, original one or maybe one with USB, haven't decided yet.
I was surprised that it had no lighter. I think my 1984 one had one, but later models had it on request?
Ugh, didn't see that at first, but I'll definitely work on the interior.
Not too bad. I may keep the tiny dinosaur.
Anybody knows what is missing down there? Badge? Seal?
Heh, the owner added a Wolfsburg badge on one side.
Engine bay pics coming soon. |

Here are the rest of the pics:
Engine bay. I really want to put in an AC unit. 39º C-40º C weather (98-100º F) is frequent here.
Would not be a Mexican Beetle without the Gerber caps.
Trunk really needs some work. Wires are a mess and the fuel tank looks ill.
The battery seriously corroded the metal thing to the left. |

Looks like a really solid car. The brake pedal is probably low because the brakes need adjusted. You should probably get rid of the baby food lids and put some hoses on there as soon as you can if the car has heater boxes (looks like it). Otherwise you should plug those big holes in the rear tin. The hole in the front is supposed to have a round cover over it. You'll find out about that when you fix that loose shifter you mentioned. Lots of info here. Enjoy your new car! And welcome to The Samba! _________________ "Just $99 down and $64 a month for 36 months buys you a brand new Volkswagen Beetle!"

Today I put an inline fuse on the wire that goes from the ignition switch to #15 on the coil....... if the number #15 ever shorts out I won't melt 10 feet of wiring. _________________ Currently own : 1969 Beetle w/ 1600cc, Single Port, Solex 30 PICT 2, Dist. 113 905 205 T, stock exhaust.

coaxed it back home after running out of gas, putting more in, and spraying the bejesus out of carb cleaner to get it going during a thunderstorm at abou midnight local time.
8 short hours later drove it to work.
4 hours later, tidied up the wiring (some cable to the autostick control valve may or may not have been shorting out against the fan shroud.)
Oh yeah, to fix the start but not run issue, replaced the vacuum hose from the control valve to the intake manifold. THANKS VWAR.ORG!
