BTW: any easier way to swap idles w/o pulling the carbs?
It's a knuckle buster.

Make it easier on yourself.. use some of those 8mm nuts with the 3/8" head for the intakes and use a long extension and 3/8" swivel socket. Piece of cake then.

Not any way that I know of.. you customize, you fight a little. Smile

No, I mean the intake to head, not intake to carb.

The wrench size on the ones I am talking about is 3/8" which is smaller than 11mm. The THREAD size is 8mm. Take them off as a unit.. much easier.

Any updates on your jetting/idle or air jet changes and effect on your A/F readings? Great post-lots of good advice.

Well I put in the 200 airs and it was pretty good. I'm going to try splitting the difference tomorrow and try the 210's. I'm pretty sure the 200 are right but I have to send the wideband back and just want to be sure.

You are getting better mpg with BP gas? Have you changed your jetting on your 40 dells or are you still at 122M 55 idle, 170 air and what is your timing set at? That is great mpg for a bus.

OK, it's been a few days but here's where I'm at.
I moved down to the 50 idles, Much better.

Idle sits on average at 12.8
I've ended up with a 150 Main and a 210 air w/ floats @10mm.

Here's my problem...
I'm pretty much hitting target range of 13-14.
WOT is rich... around 12.5 but I'm lean in the transition into the mains.
At 65 on the highway... 3100 rpm's with about 1/4 throttle
I lean out to 14.5 and even bounce to 15 and start popping.

So, my thinking is that I should drop the floats to 9mm
drop the mains to 145 and see what happens.

Does that sound like a reasonable plan?

try 220 airs and 140 mains.

and reset your idle mixture screws, you should be in the low 14s at idle.

OK so I leaned out the idles a tad. Took it for a decent drive and then tuned for best idle and I'm sitting at about 13.8 at idle.

The 50 Idles, 140 Mains, 220 airs are nice on the top end.
WOT sits at about 13.7
but the transition of light throttle @ 3200 rpms now leans out to
16 on the freeway at a 65 cruise.

What's next?

16:1 cruise is fine. 145 main next. Try to get WOT to 12.75-13:1.

You also might be able to get away with 47.5 idles, even 17:1 is ok as long as the engine doesn't fart or protest. Only way to know is to try it.

You also MAY have to pull out 2 degrees of timing (28 BTDC full advance hose off), see how the engine likes it.

I'll back off the timing, try that... then see what the 145's do.

I can feel that I'm close. It feel so much crisper than before.
I was so rich but was sort of afraid to face it.

OK, so I backed the timing down to 28 degrees. I was set at 32 degrees previously.

And I moved up to the 145 mains.

It's almost perfect.
The transition is smooth..
the WOT is high 12-low 13's.

The only area of concern is the freeway cruise. It feels fine but
at 65 mph (3000 rpm's) the meter is sitting around 14-14.5.

I bumped up to 70 mph (3300 rpm's) and it goes to about 14.7-15.2.

Is that ok or will that slight lean condition over long periods be a concern?

that's not even lean. You can go leaner on the highway, to 16-17:1. THAT is how you get some serious MPG. Avoid 14:1 range, that is the one that runs the hottest. 16:1 runs cooler than 13:1 believe it or not.

so go down another 1/2 or 1/4 size on the primary idle and try again. I think you should wind up with a 45 primary idle.

If you're going for perfection, you might want to invest in purchasing a wideband, that way you can tweak as needed when the climate changed and you'll still get good mileage. It's expensive, but in the end, it might pay for itself. Just something to think about.

this thread is very helpful. I think that instead of having a whole bunch of stickies on the top, we should have one DIY sticky thread and put all these in it.
Once my heads are on (couple weeks from now) I will have access to a Zeitronix wideband, I can't wait to tune my engine Smile
