Good thought on the hockey pucks, I use them to jack up my other vehicle since it has a flat underside. They can be very useful.

Can anyone provide more information on the pivot hinges? I would be willing to buy them direct if someone has any laying around. I am considering using another hinge with similar specs that has quick disconnect to allow easy removal/install of the bed assembly.

After measuring the roof and getting the dimensions of the bed, I then saw the 3/4 ply board.

I then fabricated the self retaining stud to keep the pillow portion in place.

I them fixed the bracket for lock of the pop top and for keeping the bed parallel to the pop top so that one can stand once inside the camper.

I also fabricated this stainless steel stopper of the pillow portion of the bed.

Of course, the two rubber stoppers placed in the middle portion of the bed to keep the bed firm while an occupant is sleeping.

With the bed and pillow portion fully flat, it was time to sleep! (Some other time, I guess Smile)

Next will be the canvass covering on all sides.

Note: I also fabricated the two 12-inch long stoppers placed under the bed that are fixed on both sides of the opening of the roof to keep the bed firm and safe while being used. I will post the pictures too soon.

Thanks,

Dong

Thereafter, I upholstered the Continental-style roof bed.

I got this hinges that looked like the original one used by Westfalia.

These hardwares came in handy in the process, especially the T-nuts that would be embedded in the ply board.

After removing the bed from the roof, it was time to measure the cushion that I used and cut.

These t-nuts were so useful. When the ply board had been upholstered, it was an easy way to bolt things together.

This may not be the quality compared to a finished one using lamination, but it was better than leaving it bare without any varnish.

Great job!
And surely, steady enough to have an adult up there, diagonally if he's tall!

Could somebody please provide dimensions for the hardware? I can't find it anywhere. I have the actual bed figured out but not the hardware.

I had a friend weld this up for my upper bed. Slides into the rear space above the Z bed. He will make them for sale and ship if anyone wants one, PM me. It is very good quality and holds me just fine. It also does not weigh much.

I finally decided to build my own bed. Built my own hardware and did my own upholstery. This should make camping with my 3 children much more comfortable.

That looks great and if I am not mistaken did you re use the same rubber latches to hold up the bed as the latches that hold the roof down? That is brilliant and I think I will do that too.

Do you happen to have the dimensions of everything? I think I will be doing a similar thing on my bus. What are those white rubber pieces that hold into the gutter rail and where did you get them?

In regards to the latches to hold up bed doc to alignment I found I needed to use another set of rubber straps because when the bed was lowered the steel parts of the Holddowns would bump into the originals on the bus ....
I tried various options bought found that adding extra rubbers Holddowns was the simplest and nice and clean and works great Smile

In regards height of someone sleeping up there , has to do with how you sleep and space you want Smile

But this is the measurements for my 72 westy that I made a bed for , you can see in my gallery and some in this thread

So the absolute full length of the cavity with top up is 72 1/2 inches
I made my bed 67 inches long , i had to cut the extra inches off the foot area, because when you close down the top , I found it would t close correctly , it would get hung up in the tent extra....

So a taller person than 67 inches can easily sleep with feet overhanging a little up the max of 72 inches , but 72 would be tight head and feet both touching end to end Smile

Hope that helps
