I wish when people said 'exact reproductions of the original items' they really ment it!

they are for the most part the same. unfortunately i dont have a photo of barndoor disconnects but i have inspected some a few years back. other than the "frame" of the disconnects being a little different ,the shaft as well as the brass threaded tube which the shaft goes through and secures the unit into place is really what would need lengthening to make up for the added space due to that rubber gromet .

i think you could maybe get away with using a 55-64 unit but i wont promise. i modified my later units by lengthening both parts described.its been some time but i think i just used the brass threaded part from a standard barndoor shaft and installed into place on the disconnect unit after welding the needed length onto the shaft.

Will this help ?

hey Trevor,
below is the best representation based on memory using your photo.for some reason i just didnt have a camera and did not take any measurments on the BD pivots when i had them in hand. but the following on the left is my hack job of "photoshop skills" using windows paint to show what a BD pivot looks like roughly.someone must have some originals to post ???
ill PM you regarding your second question....

if you get those 55-64 safari wiper shafts, you wont be able to use the orig BD wiper (inner/outer) grommets, dome washer, nut and fluted dust cover
you will have to modify shaft, brass threaded bushing...

got the 55-64 shafts on the basis that i can extend/modify the brass thread and shaft. (maybe using original non-safari ones that come with a bus).
I dont have to change the 'frame' size like you have with photoshop to make it work do i?

barnjunkie you called them 'bd safari pivots' in the Parts/Accessories Gallery but im pretty sure they are just 55-64 parts.

to answer my own question, im pretty sure no one is making the BD sliders. But they look fairly easy to replicate. Lazer cut 4mm steel.

So if anyone has some OG BD safaris please please could they scan/photocopy a slider for me, either at real size or with measurements.
Oh and are all 4 sliders the same?

thankyou

P.s. when is Gerson going to start making repop Safaris? There must be a big enough demand.

the 55-64 pivots will work after the length mods. the body wont make a difference. its exactly what i have in my 53 .

those sliders you posted ,to my knowledge are nothing to do with barndoor. at least ive never seen those. any barndoor safaris i have seen use the same slider as 55-67 safaris.but i dont claim to know everything.

i see Micro9301 just posted his real pivots.im guessingthese are the ones i had in my hand once? ill let him post his pic.

Thankyou!
I was surprised to read there was a different slider myself. Heres where i got the idea;

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=298045
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=298046
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=298047
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=298048

So micro9301 your sliders are the same as an early split, no thicker, no wider?

Cool. I think im nearly there then for a desent set of replica BD safari's Confused

I started with the CE ones. Anyone know what else is incorrect with them other than the following;
1. Frame is aluminium not steel
2. Hinges are stainless steel
3. Because of the above the two are screwed together not welded
4. The Wiper disengager was not correct.

Is that it. rest OK?

those slider must be from a boat or maybe tempo matador safari's... even more rare!!
slider are the same 1950-67
make new shafts, new brass threaded bushings and buy new BD wiper grommets, while you are at it, buy a real looking 1 eyed duck and not those things that looks like 1 eyed goofy!

Drew, nice tossed salad!
bon appetite...
