I havent had a radio in my van for since may but, you should get the Rushmore soundtrack, and also the Minutemen (especially "Double nickels on the dime" or "postmersh vol 2". I also always like driving to the Violent Femmes first record, Television's "Marquee Moon" and "London Calling" by The Clash.

Pearl Jam live at Benaroya Hall Recorded Oct 22nd 2003
It's a full acoustic show....It's the right speed for the Van.
I think my Van actually runs better when I play it.

Can't beat good 'ol Stan Rogers for good Westy tunes, failing that, one can opt out for AC/DC, Johnny Cash, April Wine, Hank Snow and or BTO.

I have to say I have not even heard of most of the bands mentioned, but we dont have a Westy, just a vanagon. We play Neil Young, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Nanci Griffith, Taj Majal, Van Morrison, Moody Blues and even a little Red Hot Chili Peppers if my son moans loud enough.

These are my all time favorite albums for road trips.

#1 The Beatles, "White Album". It is long and incredible.
#2 Pavement, "Wowee Zowee". The Princes of Indie Rock.
#3 Wilco, "Being There". There is nothing like a "Left arm tan"
#4 Yo La Tengo, "And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out", for when I want to zone out on the road
#5 Calexico, "AREOCALEXICO" for any sparse western landscapes

However, With my IPOD, I find myself listening less to full albums, and more to the shuffle setting. Here are some more bands that may pop up frequently.

Band of Horses, Arcade Fire, Spoon, Tapes and Tapes, The Decemberists, Elliot Smith, Do make Say Think, Explosions in the Sky, The Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo, Tortoise, TransAm, The Gossip, The White Stripes, Iron and Wine, The Knife, MUM, The Long Winters, GBV, Velvet Underground, Uncle Tupelo, Tom Waits, TV on the Stereolab, Sparklehorse, Spaceman 3 , Archers of Loaf, Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Silversun Pickups, Blah Blah Blah......

Oh Yeah, also the good old outlaws of Country Music's bygone era.
And much much more.

Micheal Bolton. I'll be honest with you, I love his music, I do, I'm a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, I don't know if it gets any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman".

If I'm driving alone I like heavy metal, the faster the better.Don't look at the speedometer and you feel like you're doing 90.If my wife is along we usually settle on bluegrass.

The Mother Hips, anything by the hips, probably the most underated band in California

I guess it all depends on the setting. Day, night, rain shine, kids screaming, dog barking, wife giving you that look.

This isnt much help but I had a tape from somewhere that was labelled 'Outback from Bob' and it was full of aboriginal music. Some guys chanting and playing drums and digereedoos (sp?). The coolest late night driving music. Made you feel far away.

This has turned out to be a great source of new music ideas Smile

We have really been into Bay area music from 65 to 75, I can listen to the Grateful Dead 24/7. The Jefferson Airplane, Hendrix, It's a Beautiful day, Canned Heat, Traffic, Country Joe and the Fish, etc. have been getting a lot of play time!

The wife slips in a bunch of Jack Johnson, G-Love, Zero-7, Doves, etc.

It's all good.

Cheers,
Chris

Ps. You can never go wrong with NPR Cool
