I have a 15 amp fuse on a line that comes off of the positive terminal of my battery and leads to a connection under the drivers side rear seat. It blows everytime I try to start my 73 standard beetle. The car has been running fine until I tried to start it last night. Put a new fuse in, tried again, same result. Not quite sure what to do next. Any advice would be appreciated.

do you have a bentley or the like. It has every wiring diagram needed.

IF it only happens when your starting the car check the starter wires under the car. Make sure the ground strap is on the battery. I don't know what else really, Generator/Voltage reg.

Most likely the starter.

I don't think a manual is going to help. A '73 std. should only have an 8 amp fuse under the seat for the rear window defogger if equipped and that might blow if the switch was left on and it had a short, but it would not affect the motor.

That large a fuse attached directly to the battery could be for a PO added starter relay. Unless the connection under the seat is to the regulator then it would be a main fuse which new cars have called a fusable link. VW's should have one. I added one but it would need to be bigger. 30 amp with a generator, 50 with an alternator.

You will have to be more specific where it goes.

Does that wire go to a voltage regulator under the seat? Can you post a picture?

I had a new alternator installed with a built in voltage regulator. I think you're right, this might be part of the starter relay. This hot line with the fuse connects to a junction under the seat and I have not had time to trace where the other lines lead to. I was considering disconnecting the wiring to the starter and see if I still have a short.
