bentley is the only one I refer to if this site isnt getting it done which it usually is. I keep the Haynes beside the toilet for a good laugh and occasionally when the roll is empty. |

Haynes is kind of wierd.... I guess they have pretty pictures in it you can color, though.
Muir's Idiot Manual is kind of a fun read, but I think some of the information is either confusing, outdated, or both. Again, it makes a great coloring book, if you dig that sort of thing!
Bentley is what you want. Clear pictures and precise directions on what to do. Of course, www.thesamba.com should tell you everything you need to know.... especially if you use the search button! |

bentley got off of eBay for $3.99 plus a $5.00 shipping! The guy listed it funny and no one else bid, I took a chance and lucked out...
I also have the complete idiots guide by Mr. Murr... A MUST HAVE for all VW owners... yes, even type 4 motored buses...
both get used... both have oily hand prints... but the bentley is a little more specfic to the bay IMO... |

Ihave three of them myself... THe Scientific Publications one is the one I refer to most often... seems to be very detailed and easily understandable. I also use the Clymer one on occasion, which is also good. I have the official Volkswagen shop manual too... but it is set out in a less than logical manner in my opinion, so it doesnt see much use... however it does have relatively good troubleshooting guides at the end of each section.
These manuals are specific to type-4 motored bays except for the VW one, which also covers the 1600 early bays. |

If you want to rebuild at some point, Tom Wilson's how to rebuild an aircooled vw engine is a good buy too!

wilsons book is great but the Bug Me Type IV engine rebuild is alot better and great for us visual folks. Only covers engine rebuild though. Anything else use the Bentley. _________________ 66 Westfalia

Hey , I actually used my Haynes once........but for the life of me I can't remember why ......Bentley and the original owners manual get the most use here. _________________ Xargaret

You probably had to chock the wheels, while you looked something up in the bentley! |

I've got Muir's and a Chilton's manual. The Chilton's actually answered a couple of questions that Muir didn't, go figure. _________________ '70 Beetle

Sort of. There were blue versions of Bentley, and the yellow workshop manuals complement Bentley. Printed manuals gave way to information on fiche because it was trendy in the 70s.
http://www.ratwell.com/technical/RepairManuals.html
I'd have to rate the manuals so:
Bentley - best of them all. Diagrams are from the factory, lots of detail but short on tools and technique. And of course, no index!!!
Clymer - this would be a good second choice. I like the smaller format and the photos are generally copied from VW. Each cover is part of a larger mural showing all the models.
Chilton/Haynes - I like these manuals least because of the way they are formatted and the photos are from dirty vehicles and hard to view. For the price, you might as well invest in Bentley.
Muir - hard to rate. Entertaining but out of date and he offers some poor advice on occasion. The diagrams are great but the book is generally hard to follow until you've gone over it with a hiliting marker because it tries to cover all of the models at once requiring you to skip around alot. _________________ '78 Westfalia CDN

Why wasn't the orange Volkswagen Type II manual listed? Well, the one I have is orange and looks to be where Bentley took their illustrations.
I also prefer the AFC L-Jetronic fuel injection manual as well- nice diagrams, explanation, etc.
I know he gets bashed a lot on here, but John Muir and his Idiot manual are still favorites of mine.
I also like ratwell's site for a good informative read as well. |

I did even better than that...I picked up one for $4 at a Gun and Knife show, of all places... My dad was selling some of his knives there, and I found a guy selling a bunch of books, and it was mixed in there with them.
