After I got the hang of driving a stick (this was at age 15) my dad made me learn how to shift it without a clutch and how to start it off in gear.
I not only amazed my automatic driving friends by driving a stick, I amazed my modern stick drivng friends by doing it without the clutch.
It paid off when my cable did break. I had to drive through 6 traffic lights to get to the highway, 4 of those turned red just as i got to them. I had two more stops once I got to my exit. It was nerve-racking in traffic but I got it home.
