|
|
First of all I think that's what it's called. I always thought it was an idle cut off jet but the parts book called it a pilot jet.
Is it's job to prevent run on?
I think my 6V unit is shot. When I tested it by grounding the case and putting 6 volts to it, it only worked intermitantly. Would this cause those two cylinders to not receive fuel?
Can I replace it with a non electrical jet? I'm positive my original carbs did not have an electrical style jet.
Anybody got one they'd like to sell? I'm hoping to show the squareback this weekend if my wife doesn't have the baby before then. _________________ 71 Type 1302 Custom

It's an idle jet and a cut-off jet.
Yes, it helps prevent run-on by stopping the flow of fuel through the idle jet.
It should click once if when it gets power.
VW shops sell non-electrical replacements. Make sure you get the same size jet, "55" or whatever. They may be different from left to right.
As far as I know, all original cars had electrical jets. They could have been replaced over time though. _________________ How to Post Photos

I might have one out in the shop. Yes, the pilot jet would make those 2 cylinders drop. If you are sure it is bad, just cut the pin off inside. BTDT.
Keep an eye out in the classifieds, and on Ebay. You might snag one cheap. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

When I tested the cutoff it didn't click maybe 3 or 4 times out of 20 tests.
I think it's to blame for a gremlin I'm chasing. The car runs great then all of a sudden loses power. I pulled the plug wires off one at a time and found that cylinders 1 & 2 weren't working although I had spark at the plugs. Replaced everything with my stash of NOS parts including distributor, wires, plugs, coil, fuel pump. I checked the valves and they were fine.
I was about to tear into my carbs when I thought of the cutoff valve. Tested it and it failed occassionally. I assuming that this would make the car run like crap if it didn't open when powered up?? _________________ 71 Type 1302 Custom

There is also a little screw on it so you can make it so it is always "on".
Or cut it, as Russ said
If it is cutting out, it would make that side lose fuel, which would cause 2 cylinders to lose power. _________________ How to Post Photos
