Is it possible to put a tilt steering colum in a type 3?? I have a 1971 fasty. I thing it would be different..... does anyone know if there is obe out there, or a company who builds one. I know of Flaming River, but not on their website. Just pondering the application. _________________ Do you feel lucky???? |

Kevin-
This can be done...
But you will neet to use a gm column...
they will fit in your car.
But some rewireing and brackets will need to be made.
if you want to go further we can discuss... _________________ Martin Magnia

Yes, it's been done. Both mine and my son's Roadsters have GM tilt columns in them, and I might do another type3 or 2 before I'm all done. You'll need to lengthen the shaft about 14 inches, and fabricate some brackets to hang it from the dash, and down lower near the firewall. You'll also have to do some wiring mods, as it's not a direct swap (it's close though). My son's car used a more "normal" round style column, while my Roadster used a "later squared" style column (out of a 90 Berretta). Both required about the same amount of work to install. If you go to the link in my signature, you'll see some pics of my install there (after it was done), and if you do a search in the t-3 gallery under my screen name, you'll find some pics of my son's car there. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Would useing a truck column be less hassle or is a car column a better choice??? I saw the pics Bob. Does it work nicely?? I am looking at putting a custon steering wheel in it. From Budnik or Billet Specialties. I want to have the room, but at the same time the tilt makes it easier to get in and out. This is a tuff decision to make. _________________ Do you feel lucky???? |

The biggest thing is to find a column out of a vehicle that has a floor shift in it. Truck or car doesn't make a difference, as GM uses basically the same length "upper" part, with varied lengths for the "lower" part. It works great though, and if you drop it down slightly from the stock VW position, you can get it more into your lap (if you're short like me) when in the lowest cruising setting. My son is 6'2", and kept hitting his knee on the stock column and steering wheel, but after the conversion, he doesn't have that problem any more. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The search is on!! Thanks very much Bob. I have the column out of the fasty fight now trying to fix stuff and gather parts. I have a tilt Gm column in my garage. I will mock it up and see how I like it. Thanks again for the help. More questions to come on the wireing part of it.....lol... All you guys are so informative!!! _________________ Do you feel lucky???? |

Yeah, it's hard to believe that I wrote that up over 2 years ago when I was working on my Roadster. This year we re-did the dimmer swtch set up on my son's car to match mine (his was the original guinnea pig). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Also dont forget about other columns that are telscopeing [sp?] and the ever famous swing-away colum...now your talking...
I think they were in late 60's early 70 fords?
that would be cool... _________________ Martin Magnia
