This is probably a long shot... but I'd figure I'd ask before spending the big bucks on a huge UHaul... ** Does anyone with a hitch and a tow bar or trailer want to transport a beetle from around Philadelphia to Binghamton, NY?? ** It's about 3 hours each way. Name your price.

Why not do it yourself? And I'm not saying that to be a smart ass.

Renting a U-Haul with a tow ball can't be that expensive for one day. Maybe what, $60~$75 bucks? And you need to get yourself a tow bar anyways, so that's about $75 bucks you would have to spend anyways.

Don't miss out on the road trip.

Never mind U-Haul. I checked and their milleage rates are murderous.

You could rent a regular car with a tow ball from any number of rental places. Most of them will give you either unlimited mileage or a better rate than U-Haul. You might want to lie and say that it is to tow a small trailer, some might freak out if you tell them you want to tow another car.

yea... uhaul rates are crazy... if you bring it back to the same place they hit you with some kind of 'in town' rates. 67 or 69 cents per mile, something like that. i'd rather pull it by hand. i'll check out some other places. thanks.

If you decide to pull it by hand it would be prudent to enlist some additional
laborers as pulling a complete vehicle by hand, even a Beetle, will become excessively arduous rapidly.

Do you have a hitch on any sort of vehicle? If the answer is'yes', just
buy a VW tow bar. Believe me, it will be your friend for life. Very Happy
(I've tow-barred VWs over 5000 miles now)

If you are going to tow-bar it you MUST know if it's super or standard.
(but I think you knew that or you wouldn't have asked the question.)

Looks to be a super to me. That fat chick front hood and apron are a big clue.

You may want to also consider pushing it from the back. It will be slightly easier than pulling especially during inclines. If you are able to enlist some addition assistance, I'd volunteer to steer the car. But this method of course will take much longer than 3hrs each direction.

Try etrailer.com. I had the same problem, looking at renting a u-haul to pick up a VW. Got a class 3/4 reciever for $140 shipped to my door, took 15 minutes to install. If you have a somewhat newer vehicle to put it on, most have the mounting holes pre-made. 4 bolts and it was on. For what I would have paid in mileage only, I got the hitch, reciever, wiring, gas for trip, lunch, and another hitch since the first one I bought turned out to be to low! Now any oither vehicle I get will only be around $50. to tow home!

If towing on your own doesn't work out, try uship.com:
http://www.uship.com/

My dad does a lot of deliveries from that site, he has even delivered a beetle from either NC or SC to Missouri once! AND he lives in PA and makes deliveries to NY a lot!

I have no idea what this normally costs. You can post your shipment request and the amount you would be willing to pay. Drivers will bid on the shipment and you get to pick the driver.

If you wanted, I could ask him what he would want for such a shipment, and you could go through that site to bid on it. (help keep you from bidding too high!)

Just a thought, good luck! Smile

my dad just towed my 66 bug from Rhode Island to the Bronx and didnt seem to have many problems (except backing up). I can ask him if he'd be interested if you still need help. He has a Ford Ranger truck which seemed to do the job pretty well, but no tow dolly (we had to rent one). PM me if you are still looking for a tow.
