The Grapevine was scary in my 1600......I shudder to think about a 1300. 35mph uphill, right in between the trucks! Yeehah! _________________ My, you've been naughty. How.....Delicious.

the grapevine is fun driving. I've done it in my VW & twice in a van full of music equipment, no one else in the band was willing to do it. |

Has anyone made the drive to Nevada city in a VW? The grapevine is nothing compared to that!! |

I've driven a 62 Sunroof Beetle equipped with a stock 1600 from San Diego to Phoenix & back with no problems. Then, two weeks later I made the trip from San Diego to San Francisco. Again made it back home with only 1 minor inconvinience, the points went out on me next to Button Willow. Good thing we had the abilty to get the spares we needed. Both times the car was loaded with 4 adults & a crap load of stuff. _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

Thanks for the replies everyone!
I guess it makes more sense to get a trailer. Will it fit on those UHAUL Trailers? Will the car be too narrow to get the wheels on the ramp? |

I'd tow bar it. The U-Haul trailer weighs nearly as much as the VW and is
expensive to rent. I've tow-barred VWs thousands of miles now, with no
problems. Besides, I still have the bar & lights for future use or to loan to
a friend. I can run 80 mph with my 6cyl. Ranger and forget the VW is there until it surprises me in the mirror! Of course, a spare tire, jack, etc
are just common sense. Good Luck. |

If you do decide to drive it home the one thing I would make sure to have that hasn't been mentioned is a fire extinguisher.
600 miles is nothing with a towbar, I don't know about this "grapevine" everyone speaks of though |

Yes to the fire extinguisher! Which reminds me: ALWAYS disconnect the
battery of the towed vehicle, 'cause you never know what could be
happening back there with an unknown car. I have a friend who burnt
a "mint" Ghia when, unbeknownst to him, the battery shorted out--not good. |

Yeah, fire extinguisher!!! Thank you.
Well I bought an EMPI tow bar, but I just realized that my Dad's truck doesn't have a hitch, and the bumper-step tow ball sits too high. I guess I'll have to install a hitch.
However, I just realized that I can avoid the Grapevine and just take the 101 all the way back. Its the scenic route, and I'm sure I won't have any issues that way. If I do, my Dad will be on standby with the truck.
Thanks again everyone!!! |

Take your time and enjoy the drive. If you have someone following you you should be fine. There's nothing worse than being by yourself on the side of the highway hundreds of miles from home.
If you can, take some pics as you (and the car) stop to rest on the way home. It's always fun to look back on an adventure like this. Post some pics when you get back. _________________ Designed for four soldiers and a machine gun...also for family use.

it seems like you are gonna tow you new bug home. If you do make sure to put a "IN TOW" sign on the rear window. Most drivers will pass you or at not ride your ass as much if they know your towing. _________________ '65 Austin Mini

Have a great trip home with the '66. Don't forget to keep Dad in the loop.
Take care.

Yeah, pops is definitely in the loop. He talked me into keeping the '73 so he can tool around in it.
Bill: So 18" from the base of the ball, or the top of the ball to the ground? I'll have to take some measurements either way since I have to buy the appropriate ball mount.
So with a tow bar, all I need to do is put the car in neutral, disconnect the batttery, and unlock the streering wheel, right? Lets hope I don't need to back the truck up for any reason... _________________ "My tape worm tells me what to do..." |
