Well, I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner, but here goes. This car had a 1200 in it up until a few months ago. When I bought the car, it had an 009 distributor that did not work very well. And wanting it to be "period correct" I researched the correct distributor and bought one. A Bosch ZV/PAU 4R2. I also found that Autozone sells an identical cast iron distributor so I got that one as a spare. Truth be told the AutoZone one worked better than the Bosch, so I ran that one until the motor went kaput.
Once that happened I swapped the 1200 out for a 1600. Most all the bolt on stuff moved over to the 1600 (generator, gen pedestal, carb and distributor). Outward appearance I was after was 1200 with 1600 pep. Unfortunately, the 28pict is way too lean for the 1600, and this in turn made the car, well, kind of gutless. I popped out the cast iron dizzy and the 28PICT. In went the H30/31 and the 009.
So, I've been running the 009 on the 1600 and tweaking things until I got 27.5mpg out of her. And never one to leave well enough alone, I thought I'd try out an SVDA on the 1600. See above...bad out of the box. Also, pulled the trigger too fast. An SVDA and an H30/31 are not a good match. Today after answering Bill above, a light popped on in my head. I've got these two vacuum only distributors in my garage not being used.
They are both bench set up with hold down clamps already installed. Dwell and timing set. And in the tech section here is a tune up parts chart that also gives specs on nearly if not all VW distributors. The 009 I've been running is set at 30 degrees advance and falls at 7.5 degrees at idle. So, 22.5 degrees. The vacuum only ZV/PAU 4R2 is set for 18+/-3 degrees advance.
I stuck it in the car and she runs great. Static time is 10 degrees and at idle it's about the same, maybe a tad under 10. As I raise engine speed timing advances slowly up to 30 degrees on the dot. Car runs cool as well, no pinking and no hesitation. It is also not gutless. |
That's good news! Lord knows I'm certainly guilt of buying a part and then remembering I had one in a box or drawer that I stumble on days/weeks later.. Doh!
I've been going thru all my VW parts/spares recently for this very reason. I've also been selling many items I know I'll never use as I'm tired of them taking up room!
Glad you got her running well! _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Do you think 10 degrees is too much for a 1600? |

I'm not familiar with that number on the distributor? Several of the early 60's distributors are set at 10 BTDC though. Is there another number that starts with 113? Here's a chart on the VW distributors that provides the specific specs and what to time them at. If you check that distributor on the side of it's body, it should have numbers stamped on it. Find the number and then cross check it to this list. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

I'm starting to feel more comfortable with this. The 1600 SVA is timed statically at zero degrees. At idle with the vacuum line capped it is timed with a strobe light to zero degrees using. Once the vacuum line is connected it will advance a certain amount. At 1.3" Mercury it times at 17-19 degrees before top dead center, whereas mine is set to 10 degrees statically and at 1.3"Mercury it is 10 degrees before top dead center.
Bottom line I didn't notice any drive ability issues with it set as though it were on a 1200cc motor. I know the ZV/PAU 4R2 is "all in" at 5" of vacuum. Watching the advance as it revved up, it gradually increased to 30 degrees BTDC and 10 degrees BTDC.
AND THEN PERRY WAS HAPPY BECAUSE A NOVICE LOOKING UNDER THE DECK LID MIGHT BELIEVE HE WAS LOOKING AT A 1200cc MOTOR, AHAHAHAHAHA! Oh yeah, and it drove nice and smooth, too! _________________ 1968 Westfalia

Well, it sounds like you nailed the correct timing then! I've always used that site to double verify how I timed a particular distributer. The 205K and M timed at 7.5BTDC. I have an original "K" distributor that I rebuilt on my 67. I love it. So smooth.
Glad you got it all figured out. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Just went through both your 70 and 64 build threads..man great work! I really liked the 70 mostly for the story behind it and that it was for your dad to have back as he once did. _________________ EXJAY

Thanks so much! I've just been tooling around in the '64 for the last few months. I keep in touch with the guy that bought the '70 from me. He really loves that car.
Between work and my other addiction (Jeep) I just haven't had the time to do anything with the Diamond. And a part of me wants to leave it just the way it is. Getting into the car is just like stepping into a time capsule. Everything still looks and smells just as it did years ago. Driving home at 2:00am, trying to tune in a distant am station, listening to the motor, which still purrs like a sewing machine, is exhilarating. She keeps up with the fastest of traffic, which surprises and P.O.'s the other drivers. I guess there's just something about an old bug running 75mph that just rubs people the wrong way.
Other than that, it's fun to see people stop in their tracks to watch her go by, or stop at a traffic light and the person next to you rolling down the window and asking, "What year?" Oh yeah, and the people that slow down so they can snap a quick picture on their phone as I pass them. Too much fun.
I remember 30 years ago, when VW's were plentiful, and seems like everyone had at least one in their yard, it was just a curiosity to folks as to why you would drive one. Now it's something more, now it's nostalgia, it's memory. My daughter says, "You're eccentric". I ask her why and she says, "Because you could drive anything, but you choose to drive that old car!"
She'll never understand, she never lived the life I lived. _________________ 1968 Westfalia
