just out of curiosity -- how warm does your cargo area/engine cover get after driving for awhile?

I drove my square yesterday - put about 50 miles on him and was interested to see if the cargo area should be that warm after the drive....

Never guaged it but I decided to wrap my exhaust in heat wrap and it made it a lot cooler in the cargo area and under the lid.....

If you have the insulation on the underside, and the sound deadener on the top, it should just be comfortably warm to the touch after a 50 mile run.

It gets pretty warm. Not hot to the touch though.

now I understand -- I remember removing all the insulation when I brought the square home; it had been wet at one time and had mildewed and warped, so I removed it....

so I need to replace all that insulation with something better....

When you find something to replace it, please post, because I'll need to do the same thing shortly.

Thanks!

I was thinking of using the heat shield insulation that you can buy just about anywhere automotive - aluminumized on one side, insulation on the other...

This is what I will be using on my 1970 Squareback. It is not as rigid as the original, but similar.

Yeah, I used that stuff in my Notch. It works great, and I got it thru JCW & co real cheap. I probably need to do a couple of others too, so I might as well get my catalog collection going for another year. Rolling Eyes

Go to http://www.type34.org and read the step-by-step on restoring the engine lid. I think the total cost is $25 or so. Looks almost original when finished as well.
