For those in Ontario Canada that are needing a safety check after July 1/16....
Spoke to a buddy in the trade today that does safety checks as part of his business. According to him it is not ALL gloom and doom. Most of the changes are common sense but there ARE some issues....
There are no more hot rod, fair weather exemption standards that allowed no fenders and the like. ALL vehicles must now have fenders that cover your tires.
Windshields ARE required now, deemed to be part of the roll over structure of the vehicle the way they are bonded in. Lexan won't cut it, must be proper safety glass.
One issue that will make life difficult for us of the buggy world....
There MUST be a proper defrost system, including heated air.
He is not too concerned about the frame issues that some have raised here. It is HIS opinion that modifications are allowed, but must be of safe and sound engineering. Similarly, suspensions must function properly but are not limited to OEM design.
I'm sure there are many more points to be made but his is an opinion I would be confident to repeat. He will be doing the inspection on our Tow'd when complete. His biggest concern was the defrost business but said he will ask questions of the appropriate people.
BTW....he is a hot rod type now approaching 60, with may successful projects. How about a 5.7 hemi powered, rear wheel drive PT Cruiser?
A rat rod '27 tow truck on a 3/4 ton Dodge Cummins chassis with the intercooler laying horizontal in front of the rad? Not painted of course.... _________________ Rosemarie and Paul Hill

Arent there some 12v heaters with an intregal blower available? I doubt they would actually work very well but should suit the requirements. |

Worth a look Weasel but am skeptical of ANYTHING fitting into a Tow'd... Anyone know of a miniature gas heater? (no, I was not referring to a Bic lighter!) _________________ Rosemarie and Paul Hill

To get you through your inspection ,do a google search for something called a back seat heat plus .It can be temporarily added and removed ,has 12 volt heat with a blower ,so it should be fine .There are other brands and styles so with some searching you might find something you really like that you could live with . |

Thanks Bruces.
Funny thing....I used a similar unit to assist defrosting on a Bolens garden tractor/snowblower yrs back. Not perfect but likely good enough to get through the inspectors.
Strangely, before the new regs became an issue I was more concerned with trying to keep cool in hot weather. We do have heaters in the seats cushions but have not come up with an air conditioner...yet?
Easy with a Subaru and their liquid cooling. Maybe that's a better route? _________________ Rosemarie and Paul Hill
