Ok so if your new to this thread I had another one going for a few years and well I sold it for this car. If your interested in looking at the old thread go here--> http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=591100. It will loop back to this page.
So enough with that I will re post the pics here from my last thread because I am lazy and it takes to much time to put it all in.
A family friend had a 68 in his garage that I had my eye on for 18yrs. So here are the pics.
under the front hood is super clean
Non molested wires!
Factory tool kit that needs some love.
Drivers side front apron
pass side front apron
Bottom apron
Yeah the interior all there and well its white and tanish brown but that is ok.
The carpet and under the back window are the worst. A drop in the bucket.
The dash is nice and clean.
One small hole in the headliner.
The carpet..
That primer spot on the rear fender is the small dent, going to use small dolly to get it out.
I think this motor is little tired and leaky.
Back apron strait.
Heater channels with no holes! You can see the battery peeking through the rear pan.
Oh yeah there it is.
Drivers side looks good.
Well today my girls and I started on the car. I tried to get it to start with staring fluid with no luck. I turned it over few times so I will prob have to go through everything before it runs. I hate projects that don't run and are not movable. We then started on pulling the primer off. I just ended up using soap and dish sponge. I should have taken pictures of before but I didn't so I will use the ones I had.

I am trying not to take any of the OG paint off but there are a few spots where the paint was thing already from sitting and weathering. I will take current before pictures the next time I work on it. I did realize that the drivers rear fender is dented too after I started pulling the primer off. I think it will still look good after the paint is cleaned up and three stage wax job. On my last bug I had air ride and could lay the jack mounts. I don't know if or what I want to do with this one only time will tell. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

I am not sure yet what its call but Tan? If you had some info on the color code that would be great I have not looked it up yet. Edit: It looks like its
L 620 (02) savannah beige
Its not my favorite but I will take it. It will def have to have some sort of black rims. I am seriously thinking of swapping over to 5 lug because the 4 lug rim selection sucks. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Could this thread have your solution?

Few updates. I almost dumped some fresh gas in the tank and called it good, boy was I wrong. I figured might as well clean it out make sure there are no goodies in the tank. Sure enough there was. I thought I would mention I hate cleaning tanks out.
So we got two filters yep two cause if I put them both together it would be way to long. Also a card board circle and a pile of rust. Not to mention the slop I poured out that was kind mud. So the fuel line elbow was clogged too so I prob lucked out there. I did run 120 psi though the line and it all came out on the back end of the car. I also relocated the fuel filter from here.
to here:
I would rather have it on the ground than in my engine bay fueling the fire.
As for the fuel tank I let it dry out on a hot day and ran some water though it and rinsed it out. The next thing I am going to do is drop some nuts and bolts in there and shake it around to make sure all the flakes are out of there and give it another good rinse. I have not figured if I was going to put the stock brass filter in the tanks yet as I would have to order it and I don't think I want to wait that long. I think its $3.50 plus shipping from WW I have a few other things I want to order so prob wait on that. All for now. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

So finished up the fuel tank I figured I have a filter on it that I can change so if I ever redo the tank area I will put a in tank filter or if I treat the inside of the tank. Yeah went to go start the bug and battery was dead. The kids were playing in the bug and left something. I got it charged back up and after a few cranks it started. I took it for a drive and tried the brakes car pulled pretty hard to the right and it slows down by its self. LOL So The brakes will all have to be redone. I am pretty sure I am going 5 lug so will convert over the drums. I could just slap it together but I figure I can move it for now so no big deal. Also since we can move it going to get a nice wash and primer scrub. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

So worked on the hood and front fenders. It took 3 hrs or so and my daughter helped some. It was over cast on the first one
Before:
After: It was pretty sunny but you can tell the differance. The paint is really thin in some areas but after the wax job I am going to hit this thing with it will be well worth all the elbow grease.
Going to hit the roof and finish up the drivers front fender maybe on the 4th. All for now. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

I have been able to pick away at cleaning the primer off the bug. Started working my way around the back side.
Before:
After:
And the pass side rear fender. I tried to save as much paint as possible. I think some of the spots were faded down to the metal before I got it and I just finished it off taking the primer off.
Before: The first pic is before I picked it up.
I have to take care of two of my other cars that need major work hope to get those done this week so I can get back to working on the paint. I will prob pull the running boards off and bumpers. At that point I will do a once over give it a good wash and start the wax job. Might try to pull the dents out later. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

I love Craigslist, especially the free section. You never know what you will find.
The heat risers have never been drilled out. so it does not have any leaks. I don't think the guy realized that you have to drill out the holes on the headers for those to work. Have to see what I come up with. At least it can be a winter project. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Not much going on. Went to the Seattle show and came home with a free flowmaster 40 muffler. Also getting my list to narrow the front beam, prob going 4 inches again. I realized that I am kidding myself and the only way to get this ride on the ground is to do it myself. All for now. |
That sucks, I had no idea about the Seattle show. What day was it? I was spending my time at the Pacific Raceway show on Sunday. |
