Starting recently, when closing a tab among several Forum tabs, I occasionally get a pop-up window "Are you sure you want to leave this page?". I suspect an embedded ad (CIP1?) is prompting this.
Is this normal? |

No, this is not something that I allow on the page.
It is definitely not CIP1.
It could be some ad from the Google ads that run.
If so, they don't allow this either so if someone is doing that, it will be removed by them soon.
Or it could be something bad on your computer... _________________ How to Post Photos

It happened both at home (Mac running Safari) and work (Dell running Windows), so it probably came from something on the page, not the PC. But it's so rare it's hard to pin down just what's happening at the moment. I'll keep an eye out in case it shows up again. |

Just happened to me as well, long wait after hitting the back button from general chat (I think) and then the box popped up. I wasn't really apying attention but I think it said something like error or corrupt in the box as well. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Just got it again right now leaving the engine forum, the message from webpage in the box said false. It locks up the entire computer so I couldn't do a screenshot or scroll down to see what ad was up. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

And once again right now, I can tell when it's about to happen as I get 10-15 seconds of the spinning circle for a cursor as the page loads. Once when clicking on a subject in the general chat forum and once again right now clicking on this topic, the ad at the bottom was Expedia.ca both times today as well as one the other day that I thought ahead to notice. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Googling this suggests several possibilities, but many mention Java code is behind it. Are Samba ads able to embed Java code in their ad? It triggers a Windows error code. Maybe you can ban Java in ads? Java is often used for nefarious purposes by hackers and sleazy advertisers...
The original purpose in Windows was to have a standard message for when you might be inadvertently leaving a page with something like an unfinished form. But it's been hijacked to try to get you to respond. I suspect it is a way to confirm that THEIR ad ran (if they are randomly selected) or even to claim you as a "response" so they can charge more for their web advertising or name lists, etc.
One site suggests: "it can also be triggered by a data sync problem between the browser and server, which might indeed occur if you're preventing some of the site's systems from being able to finish their normal work. I've seen the same issues being caused by Google's interactive advertising system in the past." To me this sounds like the ad is attempting some drawn out process embedded in an ad, which can't possibly be in my interest... is it data mining? Phishing? Scanning my stored files?
One brute force way to stop it is to disable Java on your browser. But then you also disable it for all the proper purposes, too. I feel like I am being extorted.
To me it's dishonest and an annoying unnecessary step, at best. At worst it is a security risk. |

Expedia and any popup are from the Google Ads on the site.
Typically if there is an issue, they remove that ad fairly quickly.
Google Ads use Javascript, not Java.
Different thing even though the names sound similar.
You only need Java running in your browser or on your computer if necessary.
For instance, I only have it installed because the USPS international shipping requires it.
You should make sure Java is up to date if you need it.
There are new updates quite frequently, often for security issues. _________________ How to Post Photos

Sorry, I didn't distinguish Java and JavaScript. I think they mentioned the latter as the source provoking the message. |

Yes, you are correct and I should have made that clear.
Typically any popup boxes like that are Javascript, unless it's the browser itself doing it.
Internet Explorer used to detect "changes" and do that but I don't think they do that anymore. _________________ How to Post Photos

It's happening again:
The ad running at the time is from Classic Bug Parts. You can see there were other topic tabs open, and it's possible something on one of those topic tabs set the trap.
This is a Windows (IE) message that was originally intended to warn a user that they were about to close a page with an open form on it.
The likely cause in this case is that this warning has been hijacked by spammers and others collecting click data.
IE should handle this better; it's now a known security issue, but is not being addressed.
Windows 7 Enterprise, SP1
Internet Explorer 11, Version 11.0.9600.18426
Annoyingly, it just happened again when I clicked on this very topic just now! |

It would not be the Classic Bug Parts ad but it could be some other ad from Google AdSense running in one of your other tabs.
The Google AdSense ads on the site are often targeted to your specific browsing history.
They do have issues from time to time with "bad" ads in their network but in my experience they are quick to address it.
Of course it's also possible your computer is infected with something. _________________ How to Post Photos

Doubtful it is an infection, as it occurs both on my work PC (Windows, IE, corporate anti-virus, etc), and my home Mac (OS-X, Safari). Must be something in one of the other pages.
There is no such thing as internet security anymore. No one cares, and we are all beta testers now.

It did it for me yesterday as well, Expedia ad at the bottom of the page of course. Funny thing is it stopped for a month or so and just began again now. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I just had it happen on the work PC (Windows, IE), and the ONLY window I had open was yahoo mail, which is notorious for embedding ads that suck up resources, snoop, and even lock up your PC. Do these people work on porn clickbait sites, too? Not that I'd know about any of that.
So it's not a Samba problem per se, but rather some slimy advertisers taking advantage of a new hole in browser security in order to generate clicks or to snoop. Yahoo allows the slime as a normal business practice, but the Samba is getting victimized by this too now. Unless there are JavaScript settings we can tweak, we may just have to live with this.
But if we can find out which advertisers are pulling this stunt, we can post their names and boycott their products. Money talks on the net, and that's probably the only leverage we have to stop them from f*ing with our privacy and convenience.
I feel like I'm at the airport and the Hare Krishna folks are grabbing me as I walk to the terminal. F*ing annoying. I want to take the advertisers out like happened in this scene in "Airplane."

The one that gets me is Expedia.ca, although I get alot of Canadian ads just because I'm in Canada, the CIBC one with the penguins always takes 10 seconds more to load for some reason, at least it doesn't ask if I want to leave.
I've never been on Expedia so I'm not sure why I constantly get them, maybe it's to capitalize on the vagabond lifestyle VW bus owners are known for? , I do notice if I Google and visit websites for other subjects the ad's at the bottom of the less technical Samba forum pages start to display sites with similar themes until I do a cookie purge, big brother is definitely watching. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Expedia on the Samba strikes again! Their ad on the bottom of the topic page. Aircooled Treasury on top (probably not a factor). |
