I've harrowed my 40 acres with tractors, unimog, vw's, 48 willys, M37 dodge, Toyotas... I found the 86 Toyota 4x4 (turbo baby) to be the best because it's an automatic. Never have just the right gear in the manuals. The heater and radio is nice too. |

Yeah, the VW was actually running condition when I "retired" it in 1993, insurance was just too much $$$ with little kids and surplus of vehicles.
I was planning to get this in running condition by end of 2016 anyway, so I feel OK with it being able to be used for something positive. And better than just having it sit, and too many memories to just sell it.
I feel the '71 Convertible is in considerably better appearance condition, as well as being rarer and worth more. My youngest has expressed interest in the '71, maybe my oldest will get the '70 someday. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Update: I discovered that the harrow currently is only churning up like the top 1 to 2 inches, the dirt/caliche is hard under that, maybe why the Frontier could drag it so readily. So we will try adding weight to the harrow to try to force it to the full 4-inches or so that it can dig up, right now it's literally scratching the surface.
If that doesn't work we might have to rent again something bigger. After that I can re-assess whether the Frontier or the VW can do the job; I am not against using winter chains on the VW for better traction either. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. If you are concerned about gearing and pulling power with the beetle, maybe try some smaller diameter rear tires. _________________ nothing |

Baby step update: this week I put a new battery into her 2005 PT Cruiser for my sister to take/drive, turned in the old battery (not group 42) that had been sitting on floor of my VW all these years. So I charged up her 26R battery and sat that down in the VW today, and even got its headlights working, first time in 23 years !!!
However, it's now summer in Arizona, today's temperature forecast at 104F, so this will wait until September to get going, once the heat dissipates a little. So figure to dismantle engine then (remember, all oil had leaked out and destroyed some bearings, we still drove 4 years after that because no knocking), and order all new brake hydraulics, then get to actual machining and brake work, and 4 tires late September. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Sounds like you will have plenty of time to find/build some sort of hitch system and find some proper tires.

That's 104F IN THE SHADE. But in reality there is very little shade. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I just recalled something that made me think of you.
One week ago today I was standing at an estate sale in central Minnesota looking at what was deemed a pile of scrap. The family clearing out the parent's home had gleaned the good stuff to sell off, and piled the rest for scrap recycling. I walked around the pile, curious. Much to my surprise I spied a factory VW beetle trailer hitch, complete with all brackets and bolts neatly bagged and tied together, laying on the pile. I pulled one of the sellers to the side, told them what it was, and recommended that they at least mark it for sale with a description of its intended purpose.
Given the lack of demand for old air-cooled VW's in the area, it may very well have hit the scrap pile anyway. I might have bought it, but I really don't need it, and had little room left to haul it home. Oh well. _________________ nothing |
