Interesting stuff. I'd call the Daimler programming effectively a cheat equal to VW.
Quote: |
Daimler’s state-of-the art software no longer needs to detect that the car is on a dynanometer. The prescribed ambient temperature during the official EU emissions test is 22 degree centigrade, well above the 10 degrees where Daimler shuts its emission treatment off. |
The Opel one is debateable. Why have there been no updates since December?
Quote: |
In response to the DUH report, Opel conducted an emission test on a Zafira with a 1.6-liter diesel engine on a four-roller test bench with all wheels in motion. The test, conduced in the presence of TÜV Hessen, found that emissions from the Zafira vehicle tested by Opel were within the legal limits. “It remains valid for all of our cars and without exception: GM-developed software has no features that detect whether the vehicle is undergoing an exhaust emissions test,” said Opel in a statement. |
The GM India thing seems more like a quality problem than a cheat. And upper management fessed up and fixed it when they found out, without having to be busted by the gubmint.

I wonder what the new BMW/MERCEDES diesels did to pass emission? Why can't VW do the same? _________________ Parts for sale https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php?username=APPLEGREENVW

Don't let that cat out!
Toyota did a similar trick back in the day, federal court. They got their hand slapped. _________________

Maybe because they couldn't advertise the cleanest Diesel engine?
Sounds like Audi used VW as a Guinea pig. _________________ It's not about the window, it's about the people.

Urea injection. VW has space problem, and it's tough to retrofit something like that when it wasn't designed in. It's what they should have done from the start. _________________ The consequences of your decisions should not be confused with fate. |

I just saw on Bloomberg that VW is about to pass Toyota as the World's #1 automaker in 2016.
So much for this destroying the VW brand. |

VW was cheap. VW stepped back from Urea injection, and said they could meet the requirements without it in 2008 for 2009TDi
A few manufactures took VWs apart trying to figure out how they (VW)was doing it,
but it took the University of Virginia tests before anyone would come out and just say that VW was cheating.

The truth is not out there yet
http://gas2.org/2016/04/24/volkswagen-decides-to-bury-cheating-report-for-now/
The cars to be fixed or bought back are 2009 to 2015
The Gen 1 don't have Urea injection, and retrofitting will be hard if not impossible as stated above,
I think these may be the buyback cars, VW was probably hoping that the Feds would just fine VW, and give the cars a use as is,
just like the Feds did Heavy Truck Diesel Manufactures in the 90's

VW Beetle TDI and VW Beetle Convertible TDI (Model Years 2012 - 2014)
Generation 2: Approximately 90,000
VW Passat TDI (Model Years 2012-2014)
Generation 3: Approximately 67,000
VW Jetta TDI (Model Year 2015)
VW Golf TDI (Model Year 2015)
VW Golf SportWagen TDI (Model Year 2015)
VW Beetle TDI and VW Beetle Convertible TDI (Model Year 2015)

everyone in the automotive industry knows that these foolish cat piss systems cause more harm than good. and it has cost consumers more money than you can imagine. so owning a new diesel is such a false economy, it's not funny....
CARB admits what a disaster these control systems have become...despite guys smarter than them telling CARB "this won't end well"
http://allianceforca.org/acb-press-release-3-14-16-carb-admits-dpfs-cause-engine-damage/
http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/bc-diesel-repair-...amage.html
http://www.livetrucking.com/carb-admits-dpfs-may-i...ne-damage/
so, I can see why vw cheated...now Mitsubishi is under fire for 25 years of bogus EPA ratings.... _________________

Guess Caterpillar foresaw this when they simply exited the onroad diesel market, back when this pie in the sky do-gooder BS started.

I don't think Caterpillar exited anything, they are making the whole truck now.
