Just finished up a 1950 25hp longblock build for a customer that has a documented Max Hoffman car.
I believe he mentioned to me it's one of the second oldest in U.S.A. Enjoy! Mr. Okrasa
This is what the customer sent me
These are the "after" photos below.
If your block is not this clean inside BEFORE you close it up.....STOP!

Looks great Joe! I'm sure your customer will be extremely happy. Is the car a September 1950 Hoffman car? _________________ New Vintage Specialist.

Hi everyone!
This is my engine, and I'm super excited to get the engine back soon from Joe!! He also built a wonderful correct transmission for me that will go into the same car. Details on my Hoffman split are as follows (from its birth certificate):
VIN - 1 - 0 179 773
Model - 11 A, VW Sedan Standard
Engine no. - 1 0 215 737 (the original engine is what Joe rebuilt)
Color - "is not mentioned" (it is still original L21 perlgrau on the inside)
Built on - 13 July 1950
Left factory on - 5 August 1950
Country of destination - Hoffman, New York / USA
Options - M 001 Chrome-plated bumpers, hub caps, outlet pipes, front indicator lights, tank cap and door handles; in addition with trim strips and passenger sun visor
I just received all of the replacement sheet metal from Wolfparts, Virtanen and Gerson, so I'm ready to dig into the body restoration...and it will be a challenge, this baby has seen better days
I will be starting a build thread soon, so stay tuned! |

A few people have asked me, "how bad was the inside? It must have been very nice to start with since it looks new now". Take a look....

What kind of brush do you use? (Nylon?) And do you use any detergents or just water? _________________ 1968 Type 1 - Royal Red --- Built: September, 1967

Not to continue beating a dead horse, but specifically what solvent do you use? _________________ 1968 Type 1 - Royal Red --- Built: September, 1967

I use a mixture of different solvents, laquer thinners and eng. cleaners. These are applied AFTER the block has been hot tanked.
Remember.......several hours of surface prep. must be done PRIOR to applying chems. Cheers! Mr. Okrasa
