I'm thinking about getting a roof rack for my 67 and also my 62. What's the best rack for your money out there? I know the german ones are the best ones, but can't find them new. Any suggestions?

When I bought my car, it came with what the guy said was an original roof rack. How would I tell, and how much would it be worth. It’s in decent condition not rust, but flaking paint and the wood would probably need to be replaced Thanks

If it's a 10-slat model, it should have the "VW Made in Germany" stamped on the front header board of the rack. If it's a 6 or 9-slat model, look for BeKoWa stamped into the clamps and/or a manufacture tag riveted to the rack.
If the wood in in good shape, simply sand of the original clear varnish. Reseal & it's good to go.

Go with a wood slat one if you can, the all metal ones tend to make a humming noise when you're driving and it's annoying. To me anyway.

A Canadian one is listed on e-bay at this time, all metal, 60's stuff. Item number is 7969873690. Check it out.

The metal ones do have a tendenacy to "hum" but that can be taken care of by putting some gas line hose on the four feet. These racks originaly came with rubber feet, but over time, the rubber (like anything else) wears thin. It's a good idea to re-fit the feet with new rubber anyway (eliminates the "hum" and provides the cushion needed to prevent scratching.

The metal one in the e-bay posting is a metal alloy that can be easily polished to a "silver looking" luster.

LOL

I have one of the repro's that Empi sells, (got it from Bugformance unassembled). It's very nice, but the finish is already flaking off some of the wood slats, (bought it two months ago).

It's very good, though.... I've had a 150 lbs, easy, box up there with no issues at all.

Shops like BFY, Kustom 1 and Latest Rage offer a roof rack with wood slats for only $150 It's not OG, but at that price who cares?

what about the ones from pacific customs for $140? has anyone had any experience with those? they look decent in their catalog (in Hot VWs magazine) and from what I can tell they are 9 slat teak wood.
also, what about mooreparts...same price and actually looks like the same exact picture.
socalimports has one for $300 and seems to be better than the moore/pacific customs one....anyone have any idea which one is actually worth the money?

I've seen it - looks like too much. I wouldn't ride with both racks on at the same time, but that's just me.

I prefer the Flat4 Stainless Steel roof rack. When I get paid next week - I'm ordering one of those. It looks MUCH better than those repro Empi racks that EVERYONE sells for about $140, and will last a LOT longer.

There is the link to the ad on Flat4's web page. The pic is just a basic pic like all the others and doesn't give you any detail. The Stainless Steel version of this rack (in the link above) won't rust and flake like the other cheaper versions. It will also polish to a MUCH brighter shine than the silver painted racks.
