Hi Guys,
I need some help on this notch. It has a lot of S features (chrome signals, 2 carb engine, etc). However, I would like to solicit input from the community. This is an imported notch from Europe (see pic below).
It looks like it should have chrome rocker molding and side molding with markers on it if its an S. Do you guys think this is an S based on the pictures? It was build January of 1964. Just trying to determine if I should buy and add the molding or not from ISP West.

Yes, Plain Jane N models never look as good as an S model with all their chrome trim! _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Even N cars had rocker moldings, so this tells me that someone has done some custom work. What I'd do is pull an inner door panel and see if there is evidence of someone filling the trim holes on the backside of the door skin.
The biggest hint I see here is than "N" cars did not come with push button switches. They had a blanking plate and push/ pulls. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Good suggestion and thanks for the push button input. I don't think many people would put in push buttons if it wasn't already there.. _________________ Link to 1966 Samba Build

Can't you determine if it is an S or N based off of the vin #? Or am I mistaken? |

It was more than likely an S. Tip one as Tram said is the push button. Tip two would be the springs on the rear trunk - no prop rod Tip 3 is the dual carb motor - if original makes it an S.
On the surface - looks like a restored/custom 64 S Notchback. Looks nice BTW and wouldn't take much to stock it out more _________________

I think the easiest way to determine if this was an N model is to see if the rear trunk light is there. The N model the pressing is there but the whole is not punched so no some light in trunk. All the other N features could have been removed but I think dome light would get over looked. Also if it's that early of a 64 it should of had prop rods on front and rear no springs. _________________ Joe -----------

Hey Notch and M113,
Thanks for the input. I am 95.349% sure its an S model. The previous owner had it restored and must not have put the chrome rocker or belt chrome back on it. I will look around for the trunk light and also take off the door panels to see if there is filler where the trim clips would have been.
Notchboy, I am in Bellingham and come to Seattle a lot on business. If I get this notch all stock, maybe the 1500 club is in my future . Beers sometime this summer with our notches perhaps?
Thanks for all the input, I read as much as possible on the boards before posting but this one needed some extra validation, much appreciated! _________________ Link to 1966 Samba Build

You don't have to remove a door panel just feel the backside of the front fenders. This just looks like someones mild custom. Armrests and dash are S _________________ '64 Notchback

Hells yeah You will have to make a Summer tip just to have a beer. I think its pretty darn clean looking. Like I said it wouldn be hard to go all stock. Its hard to tell but if they tried to copy a Ruby Red then its a sinch. When my 64 gets here by the end of this month - ill be looking closer at interior reproduction. Ruby Reds had brown or gray interiors if I recall.
Keep us posted on your decision. Would be a big plus to have one more nice notch in the PNW _________________

So I purchased this Notch from a character in Budapest Hungary. It took forever to get into a container, then to Bremerhaven on a train, then on a ship to Los Angeles, then on a truck to Bellingham.
Runs strong, looks sweet, but it is not ruby red. It was repainted something close (very nice paint) to Ruby Red but it's like a metallic red/orange. I have the original title/bill of sale from 1964 when a German farmer purchased it. There are other docs from the 2nd and it appears I am the 3rd owner.

Absolutely gorgeous notch - congrats on your purchase!
You have a strong desire to add the chrome back on. You are a better man than I, as I’d be shaking too hard taking a drill to that perfectly painted body! _________________ 1972 SquareBack.....recycled back to life......

Your wheels look like the 5.5" wide wheel that never came on a Type 3? The size,ET & VW logo etc are usually stamped on the 4 mounting flats on the inside face of 4 lug VW wheels. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts
