#3 cylinder compression bad... i think. when i turn the engine off, the exhaust has a coughing sound. i was told that #3 may not be compressing well. i am going to do a full valve adjustment and see what happens. anyone know if the dude who told me was correct in the diagnosis? |

I would do a comp test/valve adjustment/comp retest if any valves had zero clearance. |

go buy john muir's "how to keep your vw alive - a manual of step by step procedures for the complete idiot". it's a good starter manual that explains things in easy to understand terms and has lots of diagrams.
quickly tho, get a compression tester from your local auto parts store, gather your spark plug socket, universal socket, extention and rachet. warm the car up. turn off engine. take out all plug wires, take out all plugs, screw compression tester in #1 plug, turn car over 5 times, look at gauge and record reading. repeat for #2, #3 & #4. all should be over 100 and within 5-10 of each other. #3 may be lower than the others because it has a tendancy to run hotter. |
