I'd like to have a California car shipped up to Ontario.
Did you have it shipped right across the border?
Did you pick it up in the states she drive or over yourself? I know you have to fax all the paper work to the border 3 days before. I'm okay with that, but what did you do about plates and insurance?
Any insights appreciated. |

You may want to PM 71Survivor, he bought a '71 SB in California and drove it back to Toronto with the California plates. He may be able to provide some insight on what he did for licensing and insurance for the trip.

I did PM the OP, but thought it worth posting here.
I bought my 71 SB in Sacramento, flew down and drove it back.
I was lucky that it still had valid CA tags and sticker on it so all I had to do was put my own insurance on it and drive it back.
Cars sold in CA should always be sold with the tags (license plates) but often they might not be up to date with a sticker.
You have a few choices.
1. Bring valid plates with you. In Ontario you are allowed to temporarily put valid plates that you own from one car on another for the purposes of transporting it. I would have taken down Ontario plates if needed.
2. Buy trip permit(s). Can be confusing as you may need several if you are driving through many states although if you behave you will probably not be stopped or bugged about it as long as you have title, bill of sale and proof of insurance.
3. You can transfer to your name in CA. Bad idea. Will cost you $$$
4. You could run it with expired plates or no plates and have the title, bill of sale and proof of insurance. You may get away with it or may not. I would not chance it.
As said, email or fax your paperwork to the border at least 72 hours in advance.
At the border, check-in at the US side for a VIN and vehicle check - easy peasy.
At Canada side, go to customs with paperwork and you will pay any duty and taxes and be on your way with the form you need to get the car registered in Ontario. _________________ 1977 Westfalia - October 2015 - Current
