iirc there is a metal plate sort of thing moulded in to the underneath of the dash which the grille clips though to it.
it may or may not be as simple as cutting a hole and clipping in there?
I haven't wrecked any 71+ cars so I only recall when I changed speakers and what not. unlike earlier models where I diced up a few. _________________ The best of VW engine development!

There must be a way even if it is sikaflex? It's a separate part so the current dash is ok to use and would look perfectly authentic. Do you want the next one? _________________ John

depends how it goes together. like I said im somewhat certain part of the grille setup is integral with the dash, only the external bit isn't.
Ill have to remove mine to check it and perhaps you could use the bits?
might need to be a weekend project one day when I have time to get the dash out and examine it.
I'd rather not patch it with glue and crap. That will annoy me to the point I'd rip the dash out and start over even though I can't see it. Yes! those things bother me.
Anyway, will let you know. _________________ The best of VW engine development!

I don't see any risk in shipping if the box is done well with firm strong cardboard.
The problem is that the guy shipping his dash pad doesn't need a new dash does he? and who will pay the $300 freight??
The value of the tooling I make is about $5000 including about $800 in materials so I would already be invested heavily not to mention the investment in the current RHD dash which wont break even until I have made about 20 dashes. _________________ John

john, i noticed on the aussie thread someone posted all the different dash changes throughout the type 3 production.
The difference I never knew of for the late dashes is there is no mounting tabs in the middle and only one at each end.
Checking mine, sure enough no mounting tabs, what is has is a "C" channel in the sheet metal in which the dash tucks into.
Is that something you can do or will this require alterations to the moulding?
As for the speaker grille. might be in luck. Its just got 4 plastic pins on the grille going through the dash and a metal retaining clip pushed on the pin.
I didn't take the speaker out to get a complete look but thats what I can see through the gap either side of the speaker. _________________ The best of VW engine development!

I just had a look at a 72 last week and noticed the difference with this C channel right across the front, I hadn't seen one before.
I can only guess that the main body of the dash pad is likely the same and that the tabs on my dashes may still sit in the C channel and possibly need a trim back if they are too long.
Also since this dash and the original dash undersides have solid foam shape that matches the steel work below you could use a small amount of polyurethane adhesive like sikaflex to ensure the front edge stays down and in place.
I could go back and have another look at the 72 or grab the dash from it since it is stuffed and the car being parted out. _________________ John

yeah it just wedges into the c channel. no need for adhesives, it wont come out.
you like that sikaflex don't you? haha
the key is if your dash has thick/thin/long enough lip where the tabs are attached to fit in the channel.
the other thing we need to check is how big is your speaker holes grille compared to the later clip on grille ? What would suck is if the early grille is bigger than the late and can't be covered by the late grille. _________________ The best of VW engine development!

I have no idea what the front edge is like in either. The bit where the alloy trim goes. _________________ The best of VW engine development!

The current lhd repop dashes being sold by everyone else are shorter front to back than the original early style dash pads. That metal "C" channel strip replaces the tabs and screws that the older cars used. Those tabs went almost to the windshield rubber, versus being shorter to fit that channel. This might require a different mould for the later pads.
As for where the alloy trim edge is, that part of the pad didn't change. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I have one of these dashes coming. They're just so impressive I just couldn't say no. I had a late model uncracked dash in my stash which I bought on eBay a year ago but my OCD made me sell it and buy the appropriate one for my 66 without the George Foreman grill stuck on top.
I'd kick myself later if the molds get damaged or John just quits making them like all those really nice tachometer repro's of a few years ago that disappeared from existence. _________________ Sydney, Australia.

I thought you'd see the ad on Aussieveedubbers offsite ad links but it sold on Gumtree in the end. Guess you gotta be quick. only had it for sale a couple of days. Anyhow it wasn't perfect, I'd say 8.5/10.
If I had a late model I'd probably put one of johns dashes straight on. Forget that ugly grill piece altogether. the earlier dash is more stylish and Johns clever idea to form fake hole indents instead of complete holes for the speaker grill is a lot stronger. Nobody really uses that mono speaker do they?

Yeah but I tend to pick my battles when it comes to obsessing about details. For example, the original speaker cutout in any form (early or late) is a completely flawed design. I know this and anyone who has a cracked dash knows this too. The corner of that dirty big speaker hole is where the shrinkage from the sun is finding the weakest spot to crack. You could buy an uncracked dash from somewhere like England (where the sun rarely shines with any real intensity) and treat it to a few hot Aussie summers and watch it open right up.
The one I sold was not immune. It had a repair on the back. Someone caught it early and fixed it with urethane glue before it opened up completely.
The only way to really fix the issue is either reinforce the speaker cutout somehow or get rid of it completely. The fake speaker holes is a good idea. Stick the grill on top for that late model look if you gotta appease the obsessive nature. All you gotta do next is find a spot under the dash for a little down facing speaker. You can't tell me that you happily listen to a piece of shite mono dash speaker and then in the same breath say that a couple of down facing hidden speakers is gonna sound crap. I know it will sound pretty damn average but what's it replacing? Nothing special - that's what! _________________ Sydney, Australia.
