I've been searching for a couple of weeks now and can't find the answer, so if you can help or at least point me in the right direction I would be grateful. Ok I came up on an OG thermador and everything is good except the spring to retract the pull string came undone and is just coiled around the center shaft. My question is does anyone know how to reattach the spring or install an alternate spring so it works property with out cutting it open? |

Which Thermador do you have? Mine has the access panel on the rear- piece of cake. _________________

Pretty sure the rear panel is tightly fitted slip on, and so can be worked off carefully. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Oooh, I see. I forgot about that style. Always liked it- now I know I'm lucky to not have to crack one open. That pressed-on cap MUST be a damn tight fit to not leak! Does one have to carefully (forever) tap backward along that seam to remove the cap? Jeebus.
Can a wooden dowel be inserted and tapped from the front end? Oh stop it you pervies. _________________

Thanks E&B that link help.
I decided to open her up, and with a little bit of heat from the torch the panel came right out. |

thats what these forums are for smart ace
so after i heated up the tar and was able to bpull the back panel off i #1 soked the pad in a mixture of bleach and water because it stunk prety bad #2 cleaned off all the old tar using a wire wheel #3 attached the spring #4 ran a bead of 3M panel bond around the sealing surface to make it water tight again, put the back panel into place, clamped it for 24hrs, preloaded the drum, tightened the backing nut down and popped the rear cover back on and now she works like she did from day one! tis amazing where a little info from a samba forum can make life alot easier |

Would suggest to the next fixer upper to use vinegar instead of bleach. Bleach tends to break down fibers too much.
Hopefully that panel bond is not too strong, might need to remove that panel again for repairs. Dum dum AKA butyl rubber is probably a better choice and removes easily if need be.
Good to hear it is working better!! _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

nothing that a little heat wont fix like the OG tar...
dumdum stays rubber like and doesnt bond/cure to the panel wich could cause leakage. sylicone would be my next suggestion |

Dumdum for us has bonded just fine. It is used for most vintage RV windows and even early Beetles for sealing the chrome trim holes.
Silicon on the other hand has been a big failure for us and folks we know have used it. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
