A buddy of mine wants to pull the front seats out of his 412 and take them to a professional upholsterer. He's in Illinois and I'm in Texas so I'm trying to give him advice long distance. I've had lots of VWs (though never a 411/412) but this is his first aircooled VW.

If he owns a 412 he obviously needs a couple good 412 Manuals. There is a good selection of new/used VW Manuals listed by Year of Manufacture at www.books4cars.com Better also tell him to join us on www.TheSamba.com

Its very easy....but slightly awkward until you get used to it. Put a little oil on the tracks. They are usually full of gunk. Reach under the outer front edge of each seat and feel the lever under the plastic skirt. Squeeze that and lift. The seat will rise in the font to the limit of the adjuster.
Reach to the inside side of the seat at front edge and pull up on the forward most knob. The seat will exit the vertical adjuster yoke. Then grab the rearward knob on the inside and lift while sliding the seat rearward until the glide clear the end of the tracks.
The seat adjuster will have to have the back all the way up. Ray

There are stopper screws in the rails so you have to remove those first before you can slide the seats to their foremost position and lift them off.
