OK the sport is immaterial.
Suffice to say this is a team game like Ryder cup golf (a team of individuals)
Last game, we're tied at the top of the league.
We're playing the tied team, last game.
here's the rub
one place left , two players.
1st fella is Mr Dependable, average averages, just grinds out the same. No matter when you play him he'll just do his best win or lose.
2nd fella is whizz kid, same averages as Mr D, but can win with jaw dropping style, or spectacularly crash and burn. Thrives on pressure, embarrasses superior players regularly. loves being the hero, his confidence hangs on a fishook without focus
I can play these fellas any time in the match against any opponent
Help! |

tell number 2 the whole season rides on him, see him crumble and play number 1, see him inflate, play number 2.
personally though, i'd play number 1 if number 2 is like christiano ronaldo. glimpses of brilliance followed by the rest of the game lost on the sidelines doesn't help the 'team' one bit.
Mr Dependable will be exactly where you want him to be, when you want him etc. He'll give you one less thing to worry about so you can focus on the other individuals and manage their foibles
number 1 for me. works for alex ferguson with the likes of darren fletcher so why not you |

then you'll know how much effort the coach put into you at the expense of everyone else. If he can't do it on his own day in day out, then he needs something more than you can give him
Mr dependable will get you an average performance that you need not bother looking at too much. depending on the sport (bowls or some other reverential pursuit I guess ) he'll not need to be told to calm down or buck up. That way, you can take all that effort that you would have to put in to No. 2 and spread it about everyone else. Of course it does depends on the sport, if he has team mates close that you can rely on to keep him in check, it's a different story, but if it's an individual sport that everyone competes in at the same time, it's got to be number 1. If number 2 was that good, he'd be in the team already |

Look at it like this: Mr. Dependable will always get the job done day in and day out. He may not be flashy but he is reliable in what he does and he does it well. With #2 you do not know what you will be getting on a daily basis. He will either be awesome or he will suck and if he sucks on the day that you need him there goes the game. _________________ Never drive faster than your Angel can fly
