I'm to the point of painting my headlight buckets in our '55 Speedster project. They are currently silver, but I don't think that's correct. Are they the same grey as the VW(I read that Rustolium Smoke Grey is very close)? Thanks for the info. _________________ Restorer of Porsche Speedster 80486 |

The ones on my Pre-A were pretty much the same color as the early Beetle ones that I picked up for parts. I couldn't really tell from the front or even the back, but the color inside the circular collar that held the bulb housing was the same on both.
Not saying that the assemblies were the same, but the color used on each was so close as not to detect any difference. Remember though, the paint isn't a gloss (Rustoleum?) or even satin, it has an almost chaulky surface. Maybe this may have helped reflect light or even been somewhat phosphorescent, not sure. |

Hella headlight buckets through 1959 are painted dull silver on the inside and are either black (sealed beams thru '58 ) or silver on the outside. 1960 and later buckets are painted gray inside and out. This applies to both VW, Porsche and any other manufacturer (e.g., DKW, Auto-Union) that sourced this style headlamp assembly from Hella. _________________ Thanks,
