|
|
Hi..I'm a new kid on the block in this forum....I have finally progressed to my '56 356A T1 resto. Part of the bare metal process is to convert the later model teardrop tail lights to the original "bee hives"
Can anyone out there assist with template dimensions for the set out ????
cheers

I'm number three with the same need/problem. Even a series of measurements would help out. |

Alright, then......I'm number 4
I can see where the paint was blended in around the lights, and from the back on one side I think I see something that looks like a screw hole with either bondo or weld filling it in. I have the appropriate lights, and bet if the paint was ground down, it would be apparent where the original lights were located.......but it sure would be nice to know the exact locations beforehand. _________________ Jack Stenner

FWIW, I did a little futzing with Photoshop to see if I could get an idea of relative tail light placement between my car and the original photos of a '53 on Der White's website:
The perspective is a little different, but I was able to line up the major body lines, etc. _________________ Jack Stenner

heh jjjjack,
Nice futzing...I will build on that by hopefully transposing (...not futzing!!) dimensions over that image. My vehicle is almost completed metal resto work so I can easily access with bumpers removed etc....scribble on the panel work even!!!
Stay tuned

Yes, I'll be selling these once they are removed. I'm not when it's going to happen at this point...but I'm hoping to do it soon.

Perfect! That will really help. I feel pretty confidant that the innermost lights outer diameter begins at the point of my existing teardrop. The perspective of the reference photo begins to distort towards the edge, shifting the outer lights upward. You can tell this by how the bumper tips don't align. So, I think the outer lights are probably on the same horizontal centerline as the inners (unlike as the photo suggests). The key number for me is going to be the measurement from centerline to centerline of each pair of lights.
I put some reference lines over the drawing, showing the critical points that need a number. I think the best point of reference might be from the center, bottom edge of the engine lid opening (that point should be the same on all cars, whereas the bottom under the bumper is sometimes tweaked or changed as well).
I also put a copy of the Photoshop document on my server if it helps:

This might help you guys out,the distance to the inside edges of the light holes are
Inner lights 800mm
outer 1040mm
distance up from the lower edge of the rear clip to the bottom of the hole useing a tape measures 265cm for both,I know the outers look higher but if you run the tape around from the inner to the outer along the bottom of the clip it measures the same.
Ive checked on a repro clip and an original and the difference was minor.
Hope that helps out guys. |

It does! It really is pretty much all that's necessary for the install. Just need to know, what's the diameter of the hole for the light assembly? |

I received a message from someone with a disassembled '53 who took measurements (THANK YOU). Based on their car, the outer lights are slightly higher than the inners (~.75"). All dimensions are from centerline to centerline. Here they are:

MAN ! ! ! !
Thanks everyone SO much for the info ! ! ! ! !
The rear of my '55 has been so badly customized that I thought that it would be impossible to get the lights placed correctly.
Now it just seems like a snap, of course this also means that I'm gonna have to get rid of my shine-up and SWF tear drop light assemblies cluttering up the dining room and pony up the $$ for a repro shine-down plate light/housing.
Thanks ! ! ! ! !
