I've used a PTFE additive in all my cars and trucks every 50K miles since they were new (truck just clicked over 200K, wife's Mazda just turned 145K, daughter's pickup is currently at 93K) with absolutely no primary engine work ever required and still getting the same fuel mileage as when I bought them.

My question - Has anyone used a PTFE additive (i.e. Slick 50) in their type 1? I've finished my restore and as of this Wednesday, it will be my daily driver, so I'm wondering if I can continue using this product or similar in a bug.

Thoughts?

Oops. Probably should mention that it's a '69 type 1 w/ a 1970 1600 single port engine, mostly stock.

Interesting reads, Glenn. Guess my engines are the only ones that work well with the stuff. That said, I'll run my '69 without it.

Thanks.

I read a 10 year study by a major university engineering Dept on oil additives. There final result was that they could not prove they did any good.

Polytetraflouroethelyene, aka Teflon. Dupont is the trademark holder of Teflon, and the supplier to Slick 50. Dupont says teflon in an engine oil suppliment does not work. That should tell you something.

A few years ago, Dupont decided to stop the fraud by Slick 50, by cutting off supplies to them. Slick 50 took Dupont to court, and some ignorant judge sided with them, forcing Dupont to continue to supply Slick 50 with teflon.

do NOT use lucas in any motor you want to keep

i used a little less than a half qt. in my old 69.

within 100miles my motor locked up.

from what i understand lucas froths up and decreases the oiling to bearings which would explain why my #3 rod bearing got welded to the crank
